Two YSEALI East-West Center USA program graduates, Fahmi Dwilaksono (Indonesia) and Lum Jason (Malaysia) recently created an innovation laboratory called FARM-iLAB through the support of East-West Center Alumni Incubator Program. This project promotes sustainable organic farming systems to young farmers in Southeast Asia.

The recent announcement by US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the 1987 Nuclear Missile Treaty raised more concerns in Europe about its security. Trump’s blunt NATO/EU security strategy with a  question of burden sharing at its core, combined with heightened security perceptions of resurgent Russia add to a growing sense of insecurity across the European capitals. Russia’s message to the Europeans is blunt and clear: should the US withdraw from the 1987 Treaty Europe will once again become a target of Russian land-based and ship-borne missile systems.

Learning spans the lifetime of every individual and the contexts in which learning takes place cannot be separated from the influences of political, social and ever more increasingly economic concerns. The conflation of learning, education, school and college has gone largely unexamined alongside the reductionist idea that ‘being educated’ is  good if for no other reason than the financial benefit to the individual of becoming a ‘high earner’.

The day is expected to greatly promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.
