Planners Day in the Schools

In order to celebrate October as National Community Planning Month, APA MN is hosting a Planners Day in the Schools throughout Minnesota. APA MN will equip you with all the resources to host a session in a classroom at a school and age group of your choice. We are looking for 30 amazing volunteers and plan to document this work as part of a larger national initiative around National Community Planning Month. Interested? Local Government Awards

Are you a school, city, township, or county that has been innovating to improve services or reduce the cost of local government? Share your innovation for a chance to win $5,000 and a professional video highlighting your effort! Entries will be accepted through October 12, 2016. Understanding Groundwater Training

Training on groundwater protection and the role of local land use decisions will be held October 6, 2016, in Duluth at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency offices. This 2-hour, late afternoon event will start at 4 PM with registration and a meet-and-greet with light appetizers.  Presentations begin at 4:30 and will provide basic information on local groundwater and drinking water issues with time for questions.  Pre-registration is requested for this free event.

Creative Placemaking

The Southwest MN Housing Partnership (SWMHP) is seeking creative collaborators from a broad range of artistic disciplines. Artists will collaborate with SWMHP and their community partners on projects in the region; focusing on community engagement, with emphasis on such areas as affordable housing, downtown redevelopment, public safety, health and wellness, and arts and cultural development. Affordable Housing Event

The Metropolitan Council will present its next PlanIt event, The Route from Affordable Housing to Home: Effective Practices to get Results, on Thursday, October 13, 2016, 9:30-11:30 AM at UROC, 2001 Plymouth Ave N, Minneapolis. CM credits and refreshments provided. The workshop will include a presentation focused on the five key elements that are critical for creating a stronger community including technical resources to help you achieve your community housing goals.

Smart Communities Challenge

The Smart Communities Innovation Challenge is accepting applications until October 14. Esri and Leica invite governments of all sizes to think creatively about what GIS and GPS systems can do to revolutionize your workflows. Ten winners will be selected after the challenge closes, and each will receive a software and hardware prize.

Community Rating System

The STAR Community Rating System has inspired local leaders to make equitable investments, advance work on climate, integrate health into sustainability considerations, collaborate within and across departments, and build broader community support. Version 2.0 of the STAR Community Rating System will be available October 10th. On Thursday, October 13th, STAR Communities staff will host a webinar to provide a deeper dive into the new version and go over some of the most notable changes.

Sustainable Communities Leadership

The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) invites teams of senior local officials and key stakeholders from 10 cities to attend a one-of-a-kind training and peer-learning opportunity that will advance and accelerate their transition to 100% renewable energy. The Sustainable Communities Leadership Academy workshop: Clean Energy Cities will take place November 15-17 in Chicago, Illinois.

Planning for Resilient Cities

A metro workshop for cities will be held Monday October 24, 2016, at the Wilder Foundation, 451 Lexington Pkwy N, St Paul. Meet with your peers from 40 metro cities to share practical strategies your city can include to get more out of your Comprehensive Plan. The Opportunity Project

The Opportunity Project expands access to opportunity for all Americans by putting data and digital tools in the hands of families, communities, and local leaders, to help them navigate information about the resources they need to thrive. Technology for Economic Development Webinar

The Economic Development Division of the APA is hosting a free webinar entitled Making Decisions, Making Sense: Technology for Better Economic Development on Friday, October 14, 2016 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM CDT. New information technology has the potential to transform how economic development works. We will review several new tools and platforms for achieving these objectives, and we will examine the criteria you should use when selecting technology tools.

Targeted Grazing Webinar

The Nebraska Chapter of APA is hosting a free webinar entitled Goats in the City: Targeted Grazing for Low-Impact Management of Sensitive Landscapes on Friday, October 21, 2016 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM CDT. Targeted grazing is the application of a specific kind of livestock at a determined season, duration, and intensity to accomplish defined vegetation or landscape goals. This webinar will describe a goat grazing project and present it as a model for other communities to follow. It will also address common questions and concerns about targeted grazing.

Modernizing Transportation Agencies Webinar

The Transportation Planning Division of the APA is hosting a free webinar entitled Modernizing Transportation Agencies on Friday, October 28, 2016 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM CDT. This includes training on coordinating transportation and land use, practical design and the needs of all users. It also includes analysis to identify where rules, procedures and culture might interfere with the delivery of cost-effective, multimodal projects.

Nurturing Creative Places Webinar

The Massachusetts chapter of the APA is hosting a free webinar entitled Nurturing Creative Places: A Dive into the Arts and Planning Toolkit on Friday, November 4, 2016 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM CDT. Join us for a demo of the new Arts and Planning Toolkit, an innovative new resource for planners and other government staff who are interested in innovating their civic practices through projects and partnerships that engage arts, culture, and the creative community. Learn about how arts and culture can be an effective component of urban, suburban, and rural community revitalization.
