The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO), in collaboration with Dr Fiona McConnell (University of Oxford) and Tibet Justice Centre are organising a workshop entitled “Performing as a Diplomat”, which will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 8-9 September 2016. This interactive workshop is the third of the three in the project "Training diplomats from unrepresented nations: capacity building for effective UN lobbying", funded by the University of Oxford’s ESRC Impact Acceleration Account.

The workshop will analyse the structure of the European institutions based in Brussels, looking in particular at the human rights advocacy opportunities for unrepresented diplomats. The participants will then be guided through an analysis of the differences between advocacy at the UN, EU and National level, discussing how these three arenas can be combined in a more thorough and effective strategy. As a key element of diplomacy is performative, i.e. looking and acting the part and developing a lobby narrative, like the previous sessions, this third workshop will focus on how to effectively perform in the diplomacy ‘game’. It will also aim to discuss how to effectively present a community’s history, politics and immediate concerns to diplomats who may be disinterested and/or uninformed.
