Featured Artist for July: Jesus Emmanuel
This month's featured artist Jesus Emmanuel. View their work at @jesusemmanuelphotography.

Jesus Emmanuel is a native Puerto Rican artist living in the University Heights area of the Bronx. After Jesus became a right arm amputee due to a traumatic accident in 2010 that he decided to pursue photography because it challenged him physically and became an immediate way of expression. Jesus is a portrait photographer, and as a member of the Bronx Photo League at the Bronx Documentary Center (BDC), his work is more influenced by documentary storytelling.
Together with the Bronx Photo League, Jesus published Jerome Avenue Workers Project in 2015. The experience of this work inspired Jesus to produce his own personal project in Puerto Rico, “Mi Escuelita Yo La Quiero con Amor”, which was published by the New York Times Lens Blog in 2016. During the last two years, Jesus worked documenting different life aspects of the residents in the housing projects of Claremont Village as part of a fellowship by the BDC. During the COVID-19, Jesus cautiously resumed his work close to home, photographing his neighborhood. He engaged his community with a large-format camera as a way to meet his neighbors while also honing his skills in film technique. He has also begun exploring darkroom techniques and continues to hone his skills developing film and prints in the BDC darkroom.
