GMC May Newsletter

Dear Fellow Gonzaga Moms,

It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of the school year.  Thank you to everyone for all of your assistance and support with activities throughout the year.  We still have several year-end events – our Chairs will be sure to make it easy and fun to volunteer at these!  Please contact the Chairs of these upcoming events using the information below, if you would like to help at:  Mother’s Day Flowers for Unique Residential Care Center (May 6), Faculty Treats (May 6), the Faculty Summer Sendoff Luncheon (June 1), the Baccalaureate Reception (June 4), and the New Mothers’ Luncheon (June 8).  Thank you in advance for helping us make these events so special!
We hope you will join us this Wednesday evening, May 4, for the GMC-GFC Joint Meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Arrupe (Upper) Commons.  We will enjoy fellowship with moms and dads in the Gonzaga community and enjoy a light dinner, provided by the GFC, before moving into the Sheehy Theater.  Fr. Planning will provide his traditional remarks on Eye Street happenings, with brief updates from the GMC and GFC, before our guest speakers.  This year, we are honored and thankful to have Magda and Patrick Pettey join us for a very meaningful talk about Forgiveness.  This is an important topic anytime, but especially during this Holy Year of Mercy.
Please join me in thanking Jessica Koenig, Paige Melville, and Susan Yano, Chairs of the wonderful International Food Fair! The event raised $6,172 which will help defray costs for student exchanges and international study trips sponsored by the Modern Languages Department. Our sons enjoyed a beautiful day, lively music, and delicious food from around the world…and it lived up to its title of the “best day on Eye Street!”
Thanks to McKenna Center/Service Chairs, Morgean Hirt, Joanna Hoffschneider, Valerie Jopeck, and Anne Ourand for organizing last week’s bake sale, which raised $516 for the McKenna Center. Thank you to everyone who sent in treats and volunteered at the bake sale.
Last Friday the faculty and staff were treated to the last hot breakfast of the year hosted by our Faculty Treats team.  Thank you to Hazel Lychak and Sharon Persinski for organizing these breakfasts for the past two years and to the wonderful group of Moms who arrive early on campus to prepare and serve the meal.  We love that you show our faculty how much we appreciate them!
There will be lots of activity on Eye Street this month! We look forward to seeing you at our meeting Wednesday night and on Eye Street before the year ends!

With much appreciation and thanks,
Suzanne Dowd
GMC President, 2015-2016

Mentoring New Families in 2016-2017

Remember when you were new to Gonzaga?  Perhaps with your first child in high school?  The simplest things can feel overwhelming!
Please consider guiding a few new moms through the process by offering to answer questions and provide information.  Often these questions are as simple as "What kind of shoes do the boys wear?"
All it takes to provide that support is one phone call during the summer, and another during the fall, to reach out and connect with a new mom.  You can answer any immediate questions, share some of our Gonzaga friendliness, and leave your contact information for future questions. It's so easy, yet makes such a big difference.  To volunteer to mentor 4 or 5 families, please CLICK HERE.

Baccalaureate Mass Reception June 4th

The Baccalaureate Mass and Reception will be held Saturday, June 4, 2016 in the Great Church of St. Aloysius. Dress for this Mass is coat and tie, and tickets are NOT required. This event is very beautiful, and it is a perfect opportunity to invite family and friends who will not be able to attend the formal graduation ceremony on Sunday.
The Gonzaga Mothers' Club will host a reception for all members of the Class of 2016, their families and guests, and the Gonzaga faculty and staff in the Carmody Center immediately following Mass. In addition to refreshments and fun, there will be professional photographers available at the Baccalaureate Reception. This is a great time to get family together for special photographs and to gather your son's classmates for candid shots. All are welcome!
To help with this reception on Saturday or setup on Friday, June 3rd, please contact Mary Gately, Eileen Joransen or Susan Pollack at
Thank you to everyone who supported the Gonzaga International Food Fair on Wednesday, April 13th.
We heard so many compliments from the students, faculty, and staff, many saying it is one of the best days of the year at Gonzaga! Thank you to all of our wonderful, hardworking moms and dads who helped us set-up, collect, organize, warm, transport, serve, and clean-up at the International Food Fair. We were amazed by your generosity and hard work and could not have done this without your help.
Everything went smoothly and was a lot of fun -- thanks to you!   Big thanks to all who sent in such a variety of delicious foods!  Everything was greatly appreciated, and most of it was eaten, but all leftovers were sent to the McKenna Center and Campus Kitchen programs.

If you sent in dishes or serving utensils that were not disposable, these items were washed and left in the Mother's Kitchen near Carmody Lobby.  Please plan to retrieve them or have your son get them as soon as possible.

Sincerely, Jessica Koenig, Paige Melville and Susan

Get Acquainted Parties

During August, September, and October, Gonzaga families volunteer to host small get-togethers to welcome incoming freshman and transfer student families.  The GMC, in cooperation with the Headmaster's Office, works with the host families to prepare guest lists and schedule dates for these gatherings in various locations throughout DC, VA, and MD.  If you are interested in assisting with this fun way to welcome new families to Gonzaga, the GMC has some easy and simple ideas to get you started.

Sister Mary Bourdon and students from the Washington School for Girls appreciate the partnership and generosity of the GMC.  Thanks to everyone who donated school shoes, gifts and supplies for the WSG Store, and to the Mother-Son Mass collection.  The GMC presented WSG with a check for $7,500.
