Developing Finnish Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation between Europe, Africa and the LAC region 
 

The second call for FinCEAL travel grants is now open!

The deadline for the applications is May 18th.

The main purpose of these grants is to facilitate the participation of Finland-based researchers in meetings and workshops that contribute to FinCEAL’s objectives of enhancing involvement in bi-regional science, technology and innovation cooperation and policy dialogue between Europe and Africa/Latin America and the Caribbean within the project thematic areas. A Virtual FinCEAL Info Session will be held on Tuesday May 6th, 14.00 – 15.00 via Adobe Connect Pro. 

This Info Session is focused on sharing practical information related to FinCEAL Travel Grants and Project Preparatory Funding (call to be opened again in June 2014). Participants need a computer, internet connection and a headset with microphone, no program installations are required for joining the virtual meeting.

Save the Date: Seminar on Food Security On Creating transformational partnerships for food and nutrition security on 4th June at the University of Eastern Finland, Yliopistonranta 1, Kuopio


University of Eastern Finland and FinCEAL are organizing a seminar on Food Security.
The seminar will explore examples of innovative models for collaboration in addressing food security, focusing on current action to address malnutrition and undernutrition and the opportunities for research, public and private sector collaboration. Issues on transparency and accountability will also be discussed. The seminar will also explore how new partnerships can make a difference in advancing food security and what African and Finnish partners can learn from each others' best practices in effective engagement.

Save the date: Networking meeting for stakeholders interested in EU-LAC Health cooperation on Tuesday 10th June, 15.00 – 16.30 at the Academy of Finland premises, Helsinki
 

FinCEAL, Biocenter Finland and the Academy of Finland are organizing a networking meeting for actors in the field of health research who are involved or interested in cooperating with Latin American and Caribbean counterparts. Recent FinCEAL activities

  • EU-CELAC Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation
IV Senior Officials Meeting for EU-CELAC Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation was held in San José, Costa Rica from 3rd to 4th April. The objective of the meeting was to exchange views of the progress made, identify complementary initiatives and ongoing projects in the framework of the Joint Initiative, and to discuss and agree the necessary next steps in view of shaping future development projects and join initiatives. FinCEAL LAC was part of the Finnish Official Delegation.
  • Stakeholder’s workshop on Engaging SMEs in EU-Africa Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Research Cooperation
UniPID organized a stakeholders’ workshop on Engaging SME’s in EU-Africa Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Research Cooperation in cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, ESASTAP Plus, PAEPARD and CAAST-Net Plus at the occasion of the 5th EU-Africa Business Forum and 4th EU-Africa Summit. The event took place on the 31st March at Finland’s Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels. 

Stakeholders were invited to discuss and map out practical ways in which SMEs can and should be engaged in EU–Africa STI research collaborations. The workshop gathered together over 40 Researchers, Private Sector Representatives, Policy Makers and other experts from different countries to exchange views on successful practices that could be adopted, possible challenges arising from policy and practice, untapped opportunities and the way forward.

The outcome document and news article will be published on the UniPID web site later. A delegation of seven Finnish experts participated in ALCUE NET Thematic Workshop on Information and Communication Technologies held in Santiago de Chile on March 19 – 20, 2014 

Apart from information dissemination and networking, the main objective of the workshop was to analyze thematic priorities for EU-CELAC cooperation on ICT for Societal Challenges, especially in the fields of eHealth, Smart Cities and eInclusion. Experts from several Latin American, Caribbean and European countries worked together to elaborate thematic recommendations for the EU – CELAC Senior Officials Meeting that provides the framework for the bi-regional science, technology and innovation policy dialogue. VTT Technical Research Centre and FinCEAL co-organized a workshop on ICT for Societal Challenges and Information Society on 11th March at the VTT premises in Espoo. The workshop gathered together The workshop gathered together almost 50 researchers, company representatives and other experts working with ICT related themes and with a special interest in Africa or Latin America and the Caribbean region. 
Outcome document available here.   FinCEAL organized a Horizon2020 Training on Opportunities in Social Sciences and Humanities Research in International Cooperation on 3rd March in Helsinki. The event event gathered together almost 30 participants from Social Sciences and Humanities representing different Universities, Universities of Applied Sciences, research institutions and other organizations. The training was given by Ms. Mireille Van Der Graaf, a Consultant from Welcomeurope.

Upcoming workshops and events:

Development week 2014 from 30th June to 3rd July in Paris
  • VI International Economic Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean
    The International Economic Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean is a yearly high-level event that brings together policy-makers, CEOs, and experts from Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe to discuss the LAC-region’s economic performance and share solutions to its development challenges. This year the Forum will take place on 30th June in OECD Conference Centre in Paris.
     
  • DEV – EU-LAC Foundation joint meeting: “New EU development cooperation strategies in Latin America & the Caribbean” will take place on 30th June in Paris.

EU-CELAC Climate Change, Raw Materials and Resource Efficiency workshop will be held between 30th June - 2nd July 2014 in Cancun, Mexico. The event is organized by ENSOCIO-LA project. FinCEAL Travel Grants for the event will be published shortly. 

COP 20 Conference 
The 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC will take place from 1 -12 December 2014 in Lima, Peru. More information.

FinCEAL Africa Side-Event at the IST Africa Conference 2014 from 6th to 9th May
FinCEAL Africa is organizing a workshop during the IST Africa conference on ‘Cooperation with Finnish Institutions: Highlighting Expertise and Partnership Opportunities’.
The workshop will be an opportunity for all participants to meet representatives from different Finnish institutions working within ICT and who are actively involved or looking to be involved in partnership projects with their counterparts from Africa and Europe. More Information on IST Africa: http://www.ist-africa.org/conference2014/ 

African Livestock Conference and Exhibition (ALiCE2014) will take place from June 18th to 20th 2014 at Speke Resort and Conference Center in Kampala, Uganda.

Third Global Symposium on Health Systems Research will take place from 30th September to 3rd October in Cape Town International Conference Centre, South Africa.

The event is a major international gathering of 1000+ participants from all fields related to health systems research organized by Health Systems Global, WHO/Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research, five major South African research institutions, with the support of the South African Department of Health. The theme for this year’s symposium is the science and practice of people-centred health systems. More information.

eLearning Africa 2014 - 9th International Conference on ICT for Development, Education and Training will be organized in Kampala, Uganda  from 28th  to 30th  May.
The event is African continent’s largest gathering of high-level policy makers, decision makers and practitioners from education, business and government and the key networking event for developing eLearning capacities. More information.

SANORD Symposium 2014 
Southern Africa-Nordic Centre will organize a conference on sustainable future, information technology and welfare development from 10 to 12 June in Karlstadt University in Karlstadt, Sweden. Registration deadline is 15th May.

ESASTAP Plus Short-term Exchange Programme for individuals involved in technology transfer (E+ STEP)

E+STEP aims to provide opportunities for the exchange of information and best practices in technology transfer between South Africa and Europe; to enhance and promote innovation collaboration between South Africa and Europe; and to identify and reduce barriers to innovation collaboration between South Africa and Europe. The programme will provide an opportunity for individuals working in the field of technology transfer from South Africa and individuals from Europe to visit a host institution in Europe and South Africa respectively. Deadline for submissions is 16th June 2014.  More information

Second call within the Food & Business Global Challenges Programme (GCP)

The Dutch WOTRO Science for Global Development launched the second call within the Food & Business Global Challenges Programme (GCP), part of Food & Business Research. The call has been developed in collaboration with the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and focuses on two priority areas for research and innovation: Inclusive business models for food security and Regional trade for food security. Deadline for the submissions is 8 June 2014

13th International Public Communication of Science and Technology Conference will be held between 5–8 May in Salvador, Brazil.

PCST conferences are a forum for discussing a wide range of issues in science communication practice, training and research.
