Mayor Denson Recognizes Bike Recycling Program's Women's Night, Coordinator Amanda Kenney at 'Call to Service'
ACC Mayor Nancy Denson partnered with Community Connections and their program HandsOn Northeast Georgia Tuesday night to launch an initiative at the Georgia Theatre to help strengthen and promote a culture of service in Athens. Called,The Mayor's Call to Service, the effort recognized "significant organizations and volunteers that lift our city up," Mayor Denson said. "Together, we will work to connect new volunteers to organizations that need their energy."
BikeAthens' Bike Recycling Program Women's Night was among the organizations that were named to the Ten Agencies of the Week. Amanda Kenney, who co-leads the BRP Women's Night with Lauren Stone, was named a Volunteer of the Week by the mayor. Amanda and BikeAthens Executive Director Tyler Dewey were interviewed by the mayor about the work of the program, and a video of the interview will be posted to social media in several days.
An estimated 400 people and 35 agencies were present at the Georgia Theatre event. Eleven new volunteers signed up to work in the BRP bike shop at the launch of the mayor's Call to Service.

Tyler's Heading to 4th Annual Georgia Bike Summit!
BikeAthens executive director Tyler Dewey will be heading to Roswell for the 4th annual Georgia Bike Summit (Oct. 18-20) that will focus on "The Bicycle: Georgia's New Economy."
Workshops and breakout sessions will emphasize the many economic benefitsof creating bike friendly communities. As with previous Summits, there will be a number of social events and bike rides to round out the weekend. Tyler will bring back news for next week's newsletter.

Women's Bike Repair Course Ends Tonight at BRP
The last of two women's bike repair classes of 2013 will take place tonight at BRP's bike shop. Enrollment is still open for interested women. A major focus of this final class will be brake systems and adjustment. How to properly clean a bike will also be on the agenda.
Brian Molloy, the Hub Bicycle shop owner and a team professional cycle repairman, is conducting this 3rd course in two years at BRP.
After taking last year's course, many women were emphatic about having gained confidence in their abilities with Brian's help. In addition, the participants were able to ride away with a tuned bike.
Class will go from 6-8:30PM. The BRP bike shop is located in the Chase Park Warehouse, off Tracy St., behind the large cement plant silos. Cost for one class is $25.

10/26 - Jittery Joe's Fall Classic Century

Jittery Joe's Fall Classic Century REGISTER NOW! WHEN: Saturday, October 26th WHERE: 265 Newton Bridge Road Athens, GA. Across from Terrapin Beer Company COURSE: This is a metric century ride that winds through scenic Clarke Country with two course options, 62 mile and 31 miles. FAMILY FESTIVAL: Bring Everyone out for a FREE family-friendly event including children's activities, food, and music. The fun starts at 10am and ends at 3 pm.
REGISTRATION: $30 per person before October 21, 2013; $35 thereafter and on event day. For riders 21+, registration includes a T-shirt, special edition Terrapin pint glass, and Terrapin tour. Riders must have ID to redeem glass and tour. For participants under 21, registration includes a t-shirt and water bottle.
10/26 - Wild Rumpus Parade Bike Brigade
Join the fun by cycling in the first annual (unofficial) Wild Rumpus Parade Bike Brigade Saturday, Oct. 26. The unofficial ride will take place as part of the 4th Wild Rumpus Halloween Parade. Meet in the church parking lot behind The Grit at 6:40PM. Brent Buice, the "Biking Viking," promises a "RAWRing" good time.
11/01 - Athens Group Ride for November
Make plans to come to the final monthly Athens Group Ride Friday, Nov. 1 at 6PM, leaving from City Hall.
Sunset will occur at 6:41PM, so make sure you have bike lights. We'll end our 5.3 mile ride at Little Kings on Hancock St. See the entire routehere, thanks to Joe Kmiec.
The last BikeAthens group ride for the year will be the annual fun ride in the Parade of Lights in downtown Athens. The parade will take place Dec. 5 at 7PM and is always a terrific evening for cyclists of all ages.

How did the Dutch get their cycling infrastructure? This question keeps coming back because it is of course relevant to people who want what the Dutch have.
Road building traditions go back a long way and they are influenced by many factors. But the way Dutch streets and roads are built today is largely the result of deliberate political decisions in the 1970s to turn away from the car centric policies of the prosperous post war era. Changed ideas about mobility, safer and more livable cities and about the environment led to a new type of streets in the Netherlands. (See More)
The total of dense, walkable development has increased from 15% of Atlanta real estate developed from 1991 to 2000, to about a quarter from 2001 to 2008 and now the 60% majority. While about 70% of these places are in Atlanta, there was still a large number in the suburbs. On average, WalkUps had higher rents and more jobs per acre. (Full Story)
