Director's Message

I write at the end of a month that has seen great volatility on stock markets, with implications for many superannuation funds. For some, this has echoes of 2008, when many retirees and those about to retire found their retirement plans severely compromised by the losses experienced at that time. 

There are several countries that primarily rely on pre-funded accumulations to finance income replacement in retirement. Besides Australia, important examples include Chile, Switzerland and the Netherlands

CEPAR Research: projects, people, presentations and publications

New China population ageing research hub 
'in the making'

Dr Katja Hanewald has recently returned to Sydney and to CEPAR to help establish a new research hub examining population ageing in China. An economist and Associate Investigator with CEPAR, Dr Hanewald traded a role with the Federal Ministry of Finance in her hometown of Berlin for a Senior Research Fellowship and the exciting opportunity of developing this new initiative, to be based at CEPAR. more

Visiting Scholar: Professor Peter Zweifel

Professor Peter Zweifel, Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Zurich, and author of the key text Insurance economics, recently visited CEPAR as a guest of Professor Michael Sherris.

“With such a distinguished research background in insurance economics and health economics, it was an honour to have Peter spend a month with us.  Throughout his visit  he provided very lively input into research activities, and valuable mentoring for some of the early career researchers in CEPAR," says Professor Sherris. more

Mutual gains: CEPAR and Netspar project
Research Fellow Dr Jennifer Alonso Garcia recently met with academics and practitioners in the Netherlands who are working with CEPAR on a project making a significant addition to global knowledge about the design and operation of mandatory, prefunded retirement provision. more
Gaining research skills and knowledge
In late 2015 CEPAR introduced a summer scholarship program to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to experience working in a research environment by participating in the execution of a research project.
