For the fourth year in a row we headed to Fiji for the Melbourne Cup week at First Landing Beach Resort with an amazing day of entertainment but on by the staff. This included a unique fashion of the fields by the boys, warrior dancers, food, sweeps, best hat awards and the race live on a big screen. Unfortunately the crab races were cancelled because of lack of starters. Our clients dancing and joining in with the warriors was a highlight and something I will not forget for some time.

Another aspect of First Landing was the unbelievable service of the staff and this has always been the case for the five years I have been I have been going there. This trip is also a great trip for the non angler to go and enjoy a holiday while you are out fishing.

Besides this we fished for 2 days once on the operator’s 37 foot flybridge boat and once on his smaller 27 foot boat. Both resulted in good days out with Spanish mackerel, GTs, Cod, Coral Trout and many other species. There 42 foot on one of the other days the same week caught the first yellow fin of the season weigh in at 60 kg. This operator has quality boats and quatlty gear and his staff and some of the best I have seen in the South Pacific.

Prior to getting to First Landing part of the group went to Golden Point Resort for three days with two days fishing. Up there this Resort again felt liked a true fishing lodge and the boys certainly put that to a test. Nothing better than a cold beer after a day out fishing let me say and leave at that. The fishing was good but we missed a few that would have made it great but on the boat came a good GT, our only lady angler Lynda caught her first game fish in a Spanish mackerel which quote “had teeth” ,blue fin trevelly, tuna and a few other fish just to mix it up.
We are currently planning next year’s Melbourne Cup in Fiji and there will be 2 packages one fishing at Golden Point Resort and then coming down to First Landing. The other will be being based at First Landing and fishing from there.
