Next Wednesday, February 26th (Ash Wednesday) marks the beginning of Lent, a season of repentance and self-examination in preparation for the joy of Easter. This year, we will be doing a Lenten sermon series entitled Just Mercy (inspired by the book by Bryan Stevenson of the same name). As we prepare for the series, we have some exciting and important things we want you to be aware of (and encourage you to participate in):
Ash Wednesday Just Mercy Movie Screening.
If you have yet to see the movie, we will have a group going to see it on Ash Wednesday (Feb 26) at 7:35 pm at AMC Blue Ridge Theater.
Tickets are only $5. (You can get them in advance HERE.)
The sermon series will not require people to have read the book or see the movie, but we would love for people to read the book during Lent.
Copies will be available at church this Sunday. The cost is $8, but if you don't have money just take one!
Pre-church Contemplative Prayer Group
Each Sunday during Lent, Alex Kiener will be leading a pre-church Prayer Exercise in the chorus room at 10 a.m. Using practices like Lectio Divina, the goal will be to enter more deeply into the Psalms and New Testament texts that will be in the sermons.
Childcare will be provided!!! Click HERE to email with questions.
5th Sunday Discussion Groups and Activities.
March 29th is a 5th Sunday (which are always dedicated to the theme of Racial Justice). In addition to some unique elements in worship, we will be having pre- and post-church discussions on our reading and learning from Just Mercy!
This Sunday, February 23rd at 5:00 pm, Mark and Mick Schulte will be hosting an initial gathering at their home for a new Durham Small Group. This first gathering will be informal. It is designed for everyone to hangout, eat, and discuss format, meeting times, etc.
If you live in the Durham area, this is a great way to get connected! CLICK HERE for more info!
Provide a Meal for the Cates Family
We're so excited for Josh and Ileana Cates as they welcome their son, Asher, to the world! Babies are adorable, exhilirating... and exhausting. One of the ways we show love to new parents is by feeding them! If you'd like to provide a meal for the Cates family during this time of little sleep and full hearts, you can sign up here.
CAMP ATHENS 2020
This summer we will be beginning an exciting new project: Camp Athens. It is a way for us to serve and build deeper relationships with our community.
Camp is for children 8-13, and we hope many Ekklesia kids will be able to join kids from the Athens community in the experience. Learn more and register at www.CampAthens.org.
One more spot to fill!
Thanks to all our new volunteers! We now only need 1 more volunteer to be fully staffed in Kids ministry! If you're interested in serving our kids, email Lindsay Stevenson.
Also, be sure to download this month's Family Connection to see what our kids are learning!
Family Hockey Night
Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 21 at 7pm as the Carolina Hurricanes play host to the Ottawa Senators. Cost is $25 which includes the tickets and food for tailgating. Bring your own drinks, and be sure to carpool with a friend to save parking costs. Contact Bob (email@example.com or 336-307-5933) for more information.
