Newmarket reminds residents to take caution around lakes and streams

Newmarket, Ontario, February 20, 2018 – With milder temperatures forecasted and periods of rain anticipated over the coming days, the Town of Newmarket is reminding residents to take caution and avoid all bodies of water in Newmarket and surrounding areas.

According to the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA), because of the duration of the expected thaw, coupled with the forecasted rainfall, all rivers and streams will experience higher-than-normal water levels and dangerous flow conditions. Currently, portions of the watershed have considerable snow pack – it is predicted that due to the thaw, a significant reduction of the snow pack will occur. The expected rainfall and the amount of ice and snow in the storm drainage system will increase the potential for blockage and ice jams, especially around culverts and bridges. This may result in localized flooding in some areas.

In addition, the milder temperatures will reduce or eliminate ice cover in our creeks and rivers, resulting in dangerous ice conditions. The Town urges residents to keep clear of all bodies of water, including the Holland River and Fairy Lake areas of the Town. Parents are also advised to communicate this important safety message to their children.

The Town reminds all residents to have emergency supplies – including water, non-perishable foods, flashlights and a first-aid kit – that will last for 72 hours. View the Central York Fire Services website for a full list of items to include in an emergency kit and for helpful information on emergency preparedness for floods.
