NEWMARKET, December 19, 2018 – The winter holidays are just around the corner. Grab your friends and family members and enjoy one or more of these Town of Newmarket events this winter season. 

John McDermott Family Christmas Concert with Special Guests DALA
December 22
Get into the holiday mood and immerse yourself in the warm tenor voice of Scottish-Canadian John McDermott, who will perform Christmas carols and familiar tunes from the Isles. He will be joined by special guests DALA, winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award Vocal Group of the Year and Juno nominees. This will be John’s only appearance in Newmarket this year!

Live Nativity Pageant
December 22 to 24
Join us for the 31st Annual Outdoor Live Nativity Pageant presented by the Town of Newmarket and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A Journey to Bethlehem features a live cast with real animals representing the nativity scene and birth of Jesus Christ as told in the New Testament. Please dress warm. All shows are free to attend and will last approximately 15 minutes. Free hot chocolate is available courtesy of the Cachet Supper Club while quantities last. Seating on the bleachers is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

  • December 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • December 24 at 7 p.m. (one show only)

Winter Wonderland
Now until February 16, 2019
Come out to Newmarket Riverwalk Commons (200 Doug Duncan Drive) and experience Newmarket's Winter Wonderland. Enjoy free outdoor skating at the Tim Horton's Skating and Water Feature, the Mitten Tree, the Newmarket Ice Lounge, sponsored by Jay Miller Real Estate and a beautiful light display. 
Frozen Friday
Every Friday until January 4 
Join us for a fun, free outdoor winter experience including outdoor skating, a beautiful light display, Tim Hortons Express train rides, hot chocolate provided by Pickle Barrel, COBS Bread fun buns, a live DJ, Wickedly Sinful poutine food truck, and a fire/LED performance.  Frozen Friday is sponsored by: Jay Miller Real Estate, TD Bank, Roadhouse & Rose, Cintas, COBS Bread, Main Street BIA, The Pickle Barrel, and Freedom Mobile.

Newmarket Ice Lounge and Surprise Saturdays
The Newmarket Ice Lounge is the ‘coolest’ place to hang out this winter. Check for more information on surprise Saturdays at the Newmarket Ice Lounge with lots of great prizes sponsored by Jay Miller Real Estate. Train rides on the Tim Hortons Express Train is available every Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. until January 4 (weather permitting).

Mitten Tree
Visit our Mitten Tree throughout Winter Wonderland where residents have the opportunity to donate and/or take what is needed. Donations include new handmade or store-bought hats, mittens, socks and scarves with all remaining items being donated to Inn From the Cold, Belinda’s Place and Blue Door Shelters.
Tim Hortons First Night Newmarket
December 31
Celebrate the end of 2018 with us and ring in the New Year. Enjoy an evening of family entertainment capped off with a countdown and amazing fireworks show at 9 p.m. Activities include:

  • New Year's Eve Fam Jam – Glow in the Dark Dance Party
  • Featuring – live music by Urban Jive plus a live DJ
  • Free Public Skating (5 to 8 p.m.)

Seniors’ Meeting Place New Year’s Dance
December 31
Ring in the New Year and celebrate the arrival of 2019 with us at the Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place. There will be delicious platters, sweet treats, party favours, door prizes and more. Champagne will be served at midnight. To purchase tickets, please call 905-953-5325.

Art Exhibit: Mulock Farm – Artists Preserve History
In this art exhibition, the Society of York Region Artists (SOYRA) and the Town of Newmarket present a visual record of this special property through the artistic lens of twelve selected artists who spent one day on the grounds of Mulock Farm.
Location and time: Newmarket’s Old Town Hall (460 Botsford Street) inside the Serpa Galleries. This exhibit is closed from December 22 to January 1, 2019 and will reopen on January 2 to 23. For up-to-date hours of operation, visit

Newmarket Mayor’s New Year’s Levée
January 11, 2019
Join Mayor Taylor and Members of Council in celebrating the New Year. Enjoy free outdoor skating on the Tim Hortons Skating and Water Feature, a special light display, a live DJ, free hot chocolate, free train rides on the Tim Hortons Express, food vendors, special promotions, raffles, prizes and more!

Black History Month Call for Student Art Submissions 
Still I Rise: Celebrating Stories of Strength, Courage and Innovation
In recognition of Black History month, the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) is inviting Newmarket youth Grades 1 to 12 who self-identify as people of African descent to submit artwork in any medium responding to the theme Still I Rise: Celebrating Stories of Strength, Courage, and Innovation.

The call for submissions closes on January 11, 2019 at 6 p.m. EST. This is an opportunity for Newmarket youth to share and express their own individual stories for the community to see. Students can interpret the theme in any way they see fit, however, they must provide a brief description of the artwork and how it relates to the theme. Ten artworks will be chosen by a panel of jurors consisting of members from NACCA, the Town of Newmarket, and a local guest artist. The selected artworks will be on display at the Old Town Hall (460 Botsford Street) from February 1 to 23, 2019 in the Community Gallery.
Youth Art Award: Prizes will be awarded to three (3) chosen students.

Late Night Paint Night

January 24, 2019
Unleash your inner artist and create your own masterpiece of Fairy Lake in the winter led by instructor Judy Horan of Art Circle. Come with a friend or two and make it social! No experience required.
