Recycle your old clothing and other textiles
Take advantage of Newmarket’s new Textile Recycling Program to help waste diversion

NEWMARKET, ON, January 2, 2019 – The Town of Newmarket has partnered with Diabetes Canada for a new Textile Recycling Program to help support waste diversion in our community. Residents can bring their unwanted textiles (adult/children’s clothing, footwear, undergarments, towels, pillows and curtains) to the textile donation bins located at the Magna Centre, Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall and the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex.

“Textile recycling and more importantly, textile diversion is key in reducing the amount of waste that goes into our landfills.” says Mayor John Taylor. “By participating in this textile recycling program, and partnering with Diabetes Canada we are actively protecting the environment, helping to raise funds for diabetes research and supporting those in need in our community.”

On average, Canadians purchase 70 new articles of clothing a year. This contributes to 12 million tons of textile waste in North American landfills. In York Region, textiles account for up to five-to-seven per cent of waste destined for disposal.

With this new Textile Recycling Program, the Town of Newmarket joins the Town of Aurora, City of Markham, Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville and Township of King in creating a sustainable environment, supporting York Region’s SM4RT Living Plan goals and raising awareness on reducing, reusing and recycling.
