Newmarket and Diabetes Canada retrofits textile recycling bins to increase safety

Newmarket, Ontario, January 10, 2019 - After having recently launched a Textile Recycling Program with Diabetes Canada, and due to recent incidents involving clothing donation bins in other municipalities, the Town of Newmarket and Diabetes Canada have retrofitted the textile recycling bins located at the Magna Centre, Ray Twinney Recreation Complex and the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall to increase the safety of the bins for community use.

Diabetes Canada and its manufacturer have consulted with industry experts to determine the best way to increase the safety of the bins. Diabetes Canada has removed the arms of the bin that locks to ensure that the door can swing at ease if the main door is open or closed. This retrofit will help decrease the possibility of a person becoming locked in the bins.

In York Region, textiles account for up to five-to-seven per cent of waste destined for disposal. Newmarket’s Textile Recycling Program will help reduce waste that goes into our landfills. On average, Canadians purchase 70 new articles of clothing a year. This contributes to 12 million tons of textile waste in North American landfills.

Residents can also donate their unwanted textiles by scheduling a home collection with Diabetes Canada by calling 1-800-505-5525. For more information on what is accepted in the Textile Recycling Program, visit newmarket.ca/textilerecycling
