North's first e-commerce conference launched

 
NORTHERN Ireland is to host its first ever dedicated e-commerce conference in May, aimed at retailers - including both those already selling online and those who are keen to start - digital agencies, e-commerce professionals, entrepreneurs and marketeers.

eComm Live 2019 (www. ecomm.live), which will take place at the Life Church in Belfast on May 2, was founded by entrepreneur and experienced digital marketing professional Kevin Traynor, to provide a resource for the fast-growing number of businesses selling online in the north.

It is estimated that e-commerce revenues hit $69 billion in the UK last year, with some 80 per cent of people having bought something online and fashion representing the largest percentage of sales.

"The event will be a celebration of excellence across the entire e-commerce industry in the UK and Ireland. It will be our first conference dedicated entirely to e-commerce professionals, entrepreneurs, product and platform providers, digital marketers and agencies - or anyone who wants to learn about selling online," he said.

"Digital commerce is booming and given the explosive growth of e-commerce there is a need for an event to give the professionals working in the industry up to date information, insights and analysis on key e-commerce trends."

Speakers will include Gemma Spence, CEO of Omnicom Media Group's e-commerce division, and local e-commerce experts including IRP Commerce, Ground-swell, Origin Digital and Airpos. The event is being endorsed by trade body Retail NI, whose chief executive Glyn Roberts said: "While online shopping has undoubtedly changed the landscape for smaller independent retailers and high street chains, we are increasingly seeing retailers find new opportunities by adding e-commerce channels to their offer.

"How we interact, discover, purchase and return goods has become much more integrated and this conference represents a great chance for retailers who might be thinking about linking their digital and in-store experiences to learn from their peers and industry experts."

Cleaning loos can prepare you for work in ways a degree never will
 
Back in the days when I employed young people, I whizzed through their grades (usually all stellar) and headed straight for previous work experience. Those who had waitressed, washed up, pulled pints or worked in shops almost invariably made better employees in an office environment. They had already demonstrated drive, stamina and the ability to get on with other people. I knew they could haul their backside off a sofa to get to work on time.
 
And could almost guarantee they'd demonstrate more initiative, levelheadedness and common sense than those who hadn't skivvied in some low-paid occupation. I knew they'd tackle the humdrum tasks alongside the more interesting ones.
 
One reason for my certainty was the fact I'd done my time at the weekend coalface. My degree taught me how to refine a thought and sentence, but my Saturday and holiday jobs taught me how to graft.
 
So it's deeply troubling to learn, courtesy of new data from the Office for National Statistics, that nearly one in 10 adults - or 3.6 million people - have never done a day's paid work, and that two million of them are students. It's beyond my ken that so many young people can reach their early twenties without tearing themselves away from Instagram or their Xbox to stack a shelf. It suggests grievous lack of ambition, or sizeable parental hand-outs.
 
You may think you're helping your child with their studies if you fund their travels, clothes and treats, allowing extra time for revision, but it will mean they'll struggle to know the true value of their purchases - what they represent in terms of labour and time. When I ask a junior colleague to spend money on my behalf I want them to understand the cost on a financial and figurative level. If they've had to cash-up after a day flogging coffee they'll know how vexing it is when the figures don't balance.
 
When I landed my first proper job, in 1991 during a global recession, my third-class degree in English Literature was hardly a selling point. But I'd spent four years as a teen ferrying scones around the local tearooms, I'd cleaned the gents' loos at a local steakhouse (I'm still haunted by the smell of bleach and urine), been a wine waitress, acted as a cleaner for our village's only bachelor, worked in Santa's Grotto at Hamley's toyshop and, during my university years, toiled as a bar-hand and sold theatre tickets for the Oxford Stage Company.
 
During that time I'd learned how to deal with bullies, eccentrics, lunatics and low-level sex pests, and how to calm sobbing children in a three-hour queue. I'd paid my own rent for months at a time and saved enough cash to Interrail around Europe. I could write a decent sentence, but more pertinently I was adaptable.
 
People are always muttering about bringing back National Service, but I've never (yet) needed someone in my office who could assemble a machine gun. Better to boot your young out of bed on a Saturday morning and send them off to work at Tesco.
