Smart technology pilot scheme for Belfast parks
A ‘smart’ pilot project using sensors, artificial intelligence and community currency is underway in a number of locations across Belfast, aimed at helping Belfast City Council manage its parks and open spaces.
The ‘Amazing Spaces, Smart Places’ initiative is being trialled for two weeks as part of Council’s Smart Belfast programme to get a better understanding of how residents and visitors use green space in the city.
Following a competition launched last October, five companies have been awarded funding of up to £20,000 each to explore how data and innovative technologies can help Council manage open spaces in Belfast, looking at issues such as safety and the user experience, as well as encouraging people to visit parks.
Councillor John Kyle, deputy chair of Belfast City Council’s People and Communities Committee, said: “Under our Smart Belfast programme, we’re committed to working creatively with digital SMEs to encourage innovation in areas such as big data and new technologies, to come up with smart solutions to everyday challenges for our city.
“This pilot project gives us a unique opportunity to capture important data which will help Council improve how it manages our city parks and open spaces, and further enhance the experience for all users.
“Looking at how we make our parks and open spaces welcoming and safe for everyone and reduce incidences of vandalism and anti-social behaviour, are crucial; and this project will look at how smart technology can play a part in that.”
Phase one trials are taking place in Botanic Gardens, Victoria Park, Connswater Greenway, Girdwood Community Hub sports pitches and City Cemetery.

Today we celebrated the end of the 3 year Go Social programme supporting new start social enterprises and cooperatives in Belfast.

We are incredibly proud of what we have delivered with a brilliant team of highly skilled and committed trainers and mentors.

The stats we have achieved on this programme are attributable to the brilliant team going that extra mile for all clients and of course the amazing clients whose drive and passion never ceases to amaze me.

But even with 44 new starts creating 82 jobs in our city there is still much more to be done to support our third sector. We need to foster more innovation. Four years ago the board at Work West started to invest in developing a model that would support third sector organisations to develop new solutions to long-standing challenges.

Our thinc methodology combines design thinking and creative problem solving approaches and facilitates organisations to think creatively in terms of designing new products and services.

With our third sector lagging behind in terms of digital transformation which is impacting upon our ability to be competitive and deliver services there is no time like the present to support organisations to shift their thinking patterns and reimagine new approaches to service delivery. #designthinking #innovation
