Great West Way

We are delighted to announce that VisitWiltshire has been successful in securing £1m over two years from the Discover England Fund to develop the Great West Way into a premier touring route between London and Bristol.  

The ‘Great West Way’ project will be led by VisitWiltshire and is set to transform tourism along the 125-mile route – a quarter of which is in Wiltshire.

This is one of a number of successful projects made possible by HM Government’s £40m Discover England Fund, administered by VisitEngland (

The ‘Great West Way’ project will be supported by 40% match funding from partners in the public and private sectors.

2018 Consumer Publications 

Advertise in our 2018 print
Although work has started on our family of publications for 2018 there is still time to book advertising within them. Prices start from just £60 in the Travel Trade Guide, £72.50 in the Visitor Guide and £105 in the Visitor Map. Both standard entries and display adverts are available – see here for details of all the options.
Information for Events Calendars 
Attraction and Town partners are invited to submit up to 6 events for possible inclusion in the events calendars within our 2018 printed publications. Ideally we would like both the name of the event and the exact 2018 date(s), but failing that please send Jenny the name of the event and the month in which it takes place. The deadline is Monday 31 July.

Press Visits
Two Belgian journalists visited Wiltshire  from 18-22 June, writing for Belgian and Dutch emergency services publication SPOED and online magazine 

Golfhacker online magazine visited Wiltshire golf courses from 16-17 July, staying at the Holiday Inn Salisbury-Stonehenge and visiting Kingsdown, Tidworth and West Wilts golf clubs as well as Stonehenge.

Press Coverage
The Sunday Times Great British Breaks published a feature on Bradford on Avon on 9 July - this was from a journalist who visited on our fam trip earlier this year.

Leading Spanish Magazine Viajar gave Wiltshire extensive coverage in a recent 14-page UK feature - this also resulted from a fam visit earlier this year.

Our Top 10 Wedding Venues press release was featured in the Gazette and Herald series.

Coverage from Ehva Lopp has been received in Swedish publication Nara (if anyone happens to speak the language, do let us know what it says!)

Radio Coverage:
Several interviews on VisitWiltshire securing £1million from the Discover England Fund have been recorded with local radio stations, and an interview about events was recorded with BBC Wiltshire.

The first piece of coverage from blogger Jenny Sheldon (Travel to Recovery) has been received, focusing on Castle Combe.
The final pieces of coverage from Jess Mundy (Enjoy the Adventure) have been received, focusing on Longleat and Harepath House.

We received around over 94k unique visits to our website during June 2017 – an increase of 12% on June 2016. Of this, 67% were via mobile devices, including tablets (compared to 62% for June 2016).

Top content pages (excluding the main Home page) included: What’s On, Time for Wiltshire (the Late Spring marketing campaign page), Things to Do, Events, Festivals

Top product pages included: Amesbury Carnival and Show, Avebury Stone Circle, Chippenham, Castle Combe, Stonehenge

The VisitWiltshire website is packed with interesting and useful information - why not add a link to it from your own site, so that your guests can find out more about our beautiful county.

Visit Salisbury Website
We received over 20.4k unique visitors to the Salisbury site during June 2017 (this figure is included in the unique visits above). Of this, 61% were via mobile devices (compared to 59% for June 2016)

Online Photo Library

Links to albums in our online photo library are regularly sent out to journalists, bloggers, tour operators etc. To take advantage of this free promotional opportunity, forward your photos to Jenny and she will upload them to the library for you.

Equally, if you would like access to our photo library for your own website, leaflets etc, email Jenny with details of what you are looking for and she will send you links to relevant albums.

Photo Competition

Our 2017 Photo Competition, run in conjunction with Salisbury Journal and other Newsquest titles and sponsored by Castle Cameras is now underway. First prize is a fabulous Nikon D3300 with 18-55 lens and there will also be two runners up prizes of a £50 voucher.

This year entrants can send in up to 8 images per calendar month, so do encourage your visitors to send in their entries for July, and let them know that they can send in more for August and September. Entry forms and T&Cs can be obtained by emailing and full competition details can be downloaded from the VisitWiltshire website here.

Late Spring Marketing Campaign

Lifetime results for our Late Spring campaign were as follows:

• Paid Search: drove 3.3k unique visitors to website
• Facebook and Instagram: generated over 33.5k clicks and almost 2.5million ad impressions across both channels
• Facebook/Instagram video campaign: achieved almost 25k views
• Pre-roll: generated over 33k views
• VisitWiltshire themed e-newsletter: sent out to over 94k people
• Lead generation campaign: generated 6k leads
• Email broadcast: sent out to 250k people
• Competitions: achieved over 5.6k entries received between them

Please encourage your visitors to share their images on social media using #timeforwiltshire 


Social Media

As at the end of June 2017 we had 21.8k followers on Twitter, an increase of 20% on June 2016.

Please include #timeforwiltshire on your posts and we will retweet where possible.

Don’t forget that we also have a corporate Twitter feed: @visitwiltsbiz - follow us and keep up to date with our activities.

As at the end of June 2017 we had over 15.2k likes on Facebook, an increase of 48% on June 2016.

As at the end of June 2017 we had over 7.3k followers on Instagram, an increase of 102% on June 2016.

In total VisitWiltshire reached over 1million people via social media during June.

Videos and Newsletters

VisitWiltshire's main videos, including our two full length aerial films, can be viewed here.
To date the aerial films have reached over 1.5 million people.

Over the last couple of months VisitWiltshire has also launched three short aerial films. Taken using a drone, these stunning new films illustrate Wiltshire’s timeless brand positioning and give visitors a snapshot of our breathtaking countryside from a bird’s eye perspective. 

The films are themed and titled as follows:
•    Exploring Wiltshire's Kennet & Avon Canal from the air
•    Wiltshire’s White Horses - iconic views of the landscape
•    Wiltshire's ancient hill forts - an aerial perspective

Please feel free to share any of VisitWiltshire's videos on social channels and add to your own website. The full range of videos we have produced can be found on our YouTube channel here.
