Summary of items in the news:
As of my meeting today, the Governor's office and Health Dept have not changed their directive, no schools are closed. With our plans to social distance, we can, and are planning to open. If the local health department makes changes and closes areas, we will be ready to go remotely. Our cameras are arriving and we will be training teachers and educating families on how remote learning will look as a school if necessary. For now, some of you have let me know already that if we start in person, you would like to participate in remote learning. The guidelines for that process will be available soon, but in a nutshell, a family is live-streaming - this will look different in the older grades than it will in the younger grades.  Please hold onto any specific questions until I present to you the entire plan next week. One idea to help reduce the screen time fatigue is to use a projector to show the live streaming on your wall. This can ease the burden of looking at the computer screen. If you have a large television, you could hook it up there as well. If you are thinking about remote learning while we are in-person, please let me know at kathyl@stjoevanschool.org.

School districts are having a really difficult time planning for social distancing and you are hearing about some of their decisions in the news. The Governor, the Health Dept or the Archbishop will be the authorities who would close us, not the choices of the districts surrounding us. We have the space to spread out and will be using the large room of Marian Hall in ways we have never used before. Some of these new plans are exciting to us as educators. We are thinking out of the box!!

The Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics has written a statement on school reopening, review that statement here.

Other updates:
Masses will occur at a special school only time on Weds. We cannot fit all students in the church at this time so children will actually attend in the church every other week
Recess: Yes we will have recess and we are learning more and more about what we can do outside and in PE class. (not sure where the rumor started that we weren't having recess - we WILL - moving around will be a high priority throughout the day!)
Lunch: Most likely we will have a rotating schedule where some students will eat in the cafeteria and others in the classroom, that would rotate on a week to week basis - all students will still have access to hot lunch, even if we deliver it to the classroom
Drinking Fountains: We are NOT able to use our drinking fountains. They are turned off. Therefore, we ask that every child come with a filled water bottle to use throughout the day
Masks and Shields: Please have your children practice wearing masks. Please remember we are asking all families to provide their own mask and/or shield. In August we will have shields available to purchase. Here are two links to great articles to assist you in helping your children get used to wearing masks:

Distancing: Please help your child to understand that we cannot be close to our friends. We will not be able to hug them to say hello! One way to practice this is to spread your arms out and turn in a circle. If you do that and a friend also puts their arm out, that is a good visual to show your children about how far apart things will look here at school
Health Checks: Will happen every day to be sure we are all safe
Cleaning: We have plans in place for extra cleaning. Know this is a high priority
Forms: Forms normally to be returned on the first day of school will all be electronic. They will be ready in the next week or so. We ask that you fill them out right away. We will send a special flash when they are ready.  Additionally, Extended Care registration will soon be available. Again, we will let you know when you can start to sign up

Uniform Exchange: we hope to be able to open the Uniform Exchange for appointments soon. Please watch for how to sign up for a time to check it out
Vaccine Updates: If you have visited the doctor and your child has received new vaccines please send us an update from the doctor with the new vaccine information

Thank you!

Kathy
