NEWS, UPDATES, & REMINDERS

Calling all artists in 5th-8th grade
We need a t-shirt design for this year's Jog-a-thon! The design needs to include St. Joseph Jog-a-thon 2018 and our school theme "Do small things with great love". The design must be done in all black marker on an 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper. All entries must be turned in to the front desk by April 13. For questions, please email Meghan, meghanp@stjoevanschool.org.

Touching Safety classes
Just a reminder, the second class of the Touching Safety series will be taught the week of April 9.

Attention 5th-8th grade families
When we come back from Spring Break, we’re going to try something new on PE days. Because of the lost instructional time due to changing into and out of PE uniforms during the day, we are going to have students start coming to school in their PE clothes on their PE days. Having students come to school and remain in their PE clothes all day will simplify the schedule and timing both before and after PE class.

Building Futures Auction Recap
Our 2018 Building Futures Auction numbers are in and congratulations to all of you for your fabulous donations and fantastic support of our biggest fundraiser of the year! This year we are happy to announce that our net income from the Auction is $140,646, an increase of $25,636 over last year. Included in this number is our Fund A Need, which raised $71,500 toward tuition assistance. Because of your generosity, many families will be impacted in a very positive way, which in turn will help our school, our children and our school community.  Thank you so very much!

Share Hour and Scrip commitment due
Just a reminder that your Share Hour and Scrip commitment for this school year should be completed and submitted to the school office by Monday, April 16.

Return your Rice Bowls
Please bring your Rice Bowls in to the school office as soon as possible the week we return from Spring Break.

PTO Restaurant Dine-out Event
Mark your calendar - there is a PTO sponsored restaurant night coming up on Tuesday, April 17, from 11:30 am - 9 pm at Juliano’s Pizzeria, 15606 SE Mill Plain Blvd. If you dine at Juliano’s during these hours, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to St. Joseph School. You must bring the attached flyer and present it at the event so your purchase will be counted! Dine at Juliano’s and then parents can attend the Parent Education Night (see below)

Parent Education Night at St. Joe’s
Save the Date: Tuesday, April 17th 6:30pm in Marian Hall.
Parenting in the Digital Age Presentation: Parenting is hard. Parenting in the Digital Age is really hard. With numerous screens, social networks, ubiquitous access to anything, anytime, anywhere, and almost non-stop stimulation when “plugged in,” it’s no wonder kids (and the rest of us) are so mesmerized by the new digital world. It’s also no wonder why there is so much conflict around digital spaces and behaviors. We are hosting a Parent Education Night with Eric Anctil, professor of media and technology in the School of Education at the University of Portland. Come listen and discuss strategies for parenting in the Digital Age as we explore our new reality and how best to not only survive the digital revolution, but to help our kids thrive in it. Parents only please.  RSVP to Laura Veasy at laurav@stjoevanschool.org

St. Joseph Family Referral Program
We are excited about our new Family Referral Program here at St. Joe’s. St. Joseph families are great recruiters – word of mouth to family, co-workers, sports teams, neighbors and friends is the best way to share and promote our school. Participate in our Family Referral Program and earn a $750 tuition credit for your family by referring any new family with a student(s) entering Grades K-8 in 2018-2019. View the details of the program here. Contact Eileen Sherrill, 360-696-2586, with questions or for more information.

Prospective Family Open House
We are holding an Open House for prospective families on Tuesday, April 10, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. If you know any families who might be interested in exploring a St. Joseph Catholic School education for their children, invite them to attend. Share the attached flyer and spread the word. There’s also an Event on our Facebook page which you can share or even use to invite someone! https://www.facebook.com/events/106750996831462/

VIRTUS Safe Environments in-person training
All parent volunteers need to be up to date with the Archdiocese of Seattle’s Safe Environment requirements before volunteering. This means that you’ve attended an in-person VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children” class and have a current background check on file. If you are not yet up to date with training requirements, please plan to attend a class so you will be able to volunteer at school, help out in the classroom, and drive on field trips.

Upcoming VIRTUS Safe Environment Training Sessions:

Tuesday, April 24, 2018, Holy Redeemer, 17010 NE 9th St, Vancouver, WA

You need to pre-register for the training at VIRTUS Online. Begin the registration process by clicking on the “First-Time Registrant” button on the left side of the page. An online Safe Environment refresher class is required each three years after the initial training is completed. Background checks are required in the first year of volunteering and then every three years after. If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 360.696.2586.
