Dear Girl Scouts,

Our most valuable resource is and always will be our people, including our volunteers, girl and family members, and our employees. GSGI is committed to actions that maintain the health and well-being of our community. As Girl Scouts, we have a responsibility to our community to help limit the spread of this illness and set an example for others. Times like this are hard, and we’re navigating territory that is unprecedented. We appreciate the patience and grace you’ve shown us as we work through the resources and data to make the most informed decisions.

While we sent an all-member email separately, we’d like to address some specific topics related to the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

We have two phases of contingency planning going into effective immediately.
  • Phase 1 impacts now (March 13) through March 16.
  • Phase 2 impacts March 17-March 29.
Regarding Phase 1: Our recommendation is to cancel all cookie booths and programs scheduled for the next 3 days. We also acknowledge troops have big plans for cookies and programs in the coming days, so will defer to the discretion of troops and parents if you choose to continue these activities through March 16. If you choose to do so, please follow all precautions laid out by the CDC for handwashing, social distancing, etc.

Regarding Phase 2: The Cookie Program will be temporarily suspended from March 17 – 29 as we build a contingency plan to help troops to manage their remaining inventory. This is a situation with many moving pieces and parts (rewards mailings, Cookie Dough issuance, council-sponsored booths, cookie cupboard and warehouse lease expirations, etc.) We know you want more information. We will release details for the contingency plan no later than Thursday, March 19 – including adjusted program dates, any payment date changes, updates to the Risk-Free Cookie Checkout policy, and any resources available to help troops wrap-up the program in this unprecedented situation. Please be patient as we work through the details that will best support our girls, volunteers, troops, and families.

The online sales options in Smart Cookies will remain open. Girls may continue individual friends and family sales by arranging for deliveries and porch pick-ups, if they follow social distancing and hygiene practices outlined by the CDC.

Additional information regarding programs, events, and trainings will be communicated to all members, with details available on our website.

All council staff are being instructed to work from home March 17 through April 4, 2020. You may still contact us with questions or concerns during regular helpline hours at info@gsiowa.org or 800-342-8389.

These are unprecedented times, and we are taking strong measures to limit transmission of COVID-19. It is in times like this that I turn to the Promise and Law…we are courageous and strong, we are responsible for what we say and do, and together, we will get through this stronger and wiser. Thank you all for your leadership and commitment to our vision and mission!
