Developing Finnish Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation between Europe, Africa, Asia and the LAC region


FC+ UPDATES AND FUNDING

1. FinCEAL+ Reports on Finnish STI collaboration Latin America and the Caribbean
FinCEAL Plus coordinators have conducted analytic studies of the policy landscape, and status of Finnish STI collaboration with the three regions. A draft of the long report on Latin America and the Caribbean is now available on the FinCEAL Plus website! Also check out the previously published policy briefs here.

2. FinCEAL+ LAC event "Bioeconomy and development: Opportunities through Nordic-Southern Cone countries cooperation" seminar held in Buenos Aires in October
What happens when Finnish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Argentine, Brazilian, Uruguyan and Chilean experts sit down to discuss about bioeconomy? Read more about the seminar on our website!

3. FinCEAL+ LAC dialogue session on cooperation between researchers and local actors at CILAC 2018 in Panama City
FinCEAL+ LAC joined forces with experts from Aalto LAB Mexico/Aalto University, Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies/University of Helsinki, Perpendicular (Guatemala) and Design Your Action (Mexico) in a dialogue session at Open Science Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean (CILAC 2018), organized by UNESCO. The panel  focused on the importance of promoting cooperation between academia and local actors in the implementation of projects that help urban and rural communities to solve some of their most urgent problems. 4. FinCEAL Future?
The FinCEAL+ team is anticipating the continuation funding decision by the Ministry of Education and Culture in early December. More information will be published in the last newsletter of the year! 

The last FinCEAL Plus Newsletter of the year will be published in late December.

5. News from FinCEAL Plus Grantees


FinCEAL Plus Africa and Asia Travel Grantee Dr. Pèter Poczai from the Finnish National Museum of History (University of Helsinki) attended the 15th Solanaceae Conference, 30 September - 4 October 2018 in Chiang Mai,Thailand 

The 15th Solanaceae Conference was organized in Chiang Mai to discuss the new dynamics and challenges in solanaceae breeding and genomics. The conference offered great opportunities for networking and to exchange ideas with top scientists and professionals from industry and the research community. The conference aimed to explore the major advances in proteogenomics and the breeding of solanaceae crops. Read the full grantee story here

FET Open supports early stage science and technology research exploring new foundations for radically new future technologies by challenging current paradigms and venturing into unknown areas. A bottom-up selection process widely open to any research idea builds up a diverse portfolio of new research directions. Early detection of promising new areas, developments and trends, along with attracting new and high-potential research and innovation players, are key factors. More information

IST-Africa 2019 Call for Papers. Deadline: 15 December, 2018
IST-Africa is a strategic collaboration between IIMC (Ireland) and Ministries and National Councils responsible for Innovation, Science and Technology adoption, policy and research in 18 African Countries. IST is supported by the European Commission (EC) and African Union Commission (AUC), and co-funded under Horizon 2020. More information

EU-India launches a Joint CALL on Research and Innovation to develop Next Generation Influenza Vaccine
The European Union (EU) and India announced that they will engage together on research and innovation to develop a Next Generation Influenza Vaccine to protect citizens worldwide.

  • EC ICT 2018 Networking and Face2Face Brokerage Event, 4-6 December, Vienna, Austria
    The European Commission has organized a networking event for the specialists in the field of ICT. The networking sessions will be open to all interested participants, while the Face2Face brokerage event will consist of prearranged one-on-one meetings. More information and registration details
  • The 1st PRE-LEAP-RE Strategic Workshop, 6-7 December, Brussels, Belgium

DESIGNING FUTURE ENERGY POLICIES: Social sciences and humanities to accelerate the energy transition, 22 January 2019, Brussels, Belgium
This conference will underline how crucial social data is to accelerating the decarbonisation of our economy and making a real dent in climate change. It will also present concrete recommendations on how to advance and better design future European energy policies in the context of the upcoming research and innovation framework; Horizon Europe. My Genome: Our Future, "Integrating genomics into personalised healthcare: a science-for-policy perspective", 12-13 February 2019, Brussels, Belgium
This high level conference will bring together experts from around the world to discuss the potential of genomics in the prevention, diagnostics, and therapy for cancer and the new opportunities it may bring for citizens and patients in the EU. Additionally, The discussions will highlight challenges to the implementation and uptake of genomics-based screening and diagnosis in health systems and map the appropriate actions. More information

H2020 EU New developments in Industrial Biocatalysis demonstration workshop, 14 February 2019, Frankfurt, Germany
The aim of the workshop is to explore the state of the art in industrial biocatalysis through the new technologies developed in the EU Horizon 2020 projects ROBOX and CARBAZYMES. More information

FSDR International Development Days, "Repositioning Global Development: changing actors, geographies and ontologies" 27 February- 3 March 2019, Helsinki, Finland
The conference aims to discuss alternative development strategies and the role of emerging actors in development across multiple scales. Contributions from various disciplines, including human geography, environmental politics, development studies, sociology and institutional economics are called upon to explore relevant themes and questions identified. Find out more about the conference here

APESS 2019 - 12th Asia-Pacific-Euro Summer School on Smart Structures Technology, 15 July - 3 August, Rome, Italy
APESS 2019 is an intensive three-week programme of coursework, lectures, laboratory exercises, technical visit to L’Aquila. During APESS 2019 students will attend lectures given by world-leading experts in Civil Engineering, Structural Dynamics and Control, Smart Structures Technology and Structural Health Monitoring. IUFRO World Congress 2019, 29 September - 5 October, Paraná, Brazil 

For the first time ever, Latin America, will host the IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) World Congress. The Congress will be organized and coordinated by the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB) and EMBRAPA. Approximately 3000 participants are expected to converge in Paraná to discuss Forest research. Oslo Manual 2018: Guidelines for Collecting, Reporting and Using Data on Innovation, 4th Edition, Now Available
The Oslo Manual is an essential worldwide tool for statisticians and policy makers concerned with innovation. It includes definitions of basic concepts, data collection guidelines, and classifications for compiling innovation statistics. Planning and prospects for renewable power: WEST AFRICA
Low-cost renewable energy, especially from solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, has become an increasingly important part of West Africa’s electricity supply. This report outlines three broad scenarios for the growth of renewables in the region’s power systems, particularly in relation to key national and regional targets. Youth Employment and the Private Sector in Africa: Institute of Development Studies
In this IDS Bulletin, a group of young African Scholars explore the scope of research and policy challenges in three specific areas: agribusiness and youth employment; skills gaps and youth employability; and youth employment in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Read the bulletin here

OECD Development Centre's Latin American Economic Outlook 2018: Rethinking Institutions for Development
The publication focuses on how institutions can underpin the foundations of a long period of sustained and inclusive growth and increased well-being. The report begins with an overview of the main macroeconomic challenges, analysing the complex macroeconomic context in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region, and exploring policy options to boost potential growth, with a particular focus on trade. It then analyses the link between low trust and society’s disconnection and dissatisfaction  with institutions and a number of long-standing, structural features of the region as well as more recent, contextual dynamics that are shaping LAC’s economy, society and politics.
