Words of Andean Wisdom

February         Febrero         Hatun Poqoy Killa

The only thing we know is the lived experience that forms the various parts of the present. For this we, the Runas - or human beings - do not give our backs to the past. Rather we honor it as our guide and inspiration on our eternal walk. In Quechua, Ñawpa refers to the ancestral and at the same time it means in front of, and, as such, it locates the past before us.

Our Song of the Month:

Thank you mother life,
I am happy!
Thank you mother life,
I am happy!
Giving and receiving, loving
I am a free sacred hummingbird!
Respecting, being righteous, being joyful
I am a free sacred hummingbird!
Not afraid of anything
I have a happy life!
Not afraid of anyone
I have a happy life!

* Kusi Kawsay School’s Anthem Song.  Written and composed by Carlos Franco Salas and Tita Monteagudo Zevallos

Encouragement of the Month:
How about adding some spontaneity and color into your life!  What can you do to live a happy life?  Share this joy of life with your community, organize a gathering with friends, play some beautiful music and sing heartwarming songs!  Reach out to those in need of a listener this month, visit someone who could use a friend and a deep, healthy conversation!  A day spent together, giving and receiving, adds beauty to this game of life in which we are all at play!  Be an active and positive member of your community in small and big ways, especially when no one is watching!

The Month of Rain and Fertility

February pours rain over our land.  Our corn is flourishing and will be harvested in time for Pukllay, a time in which couples dance for four days - celebrating, honoring and promoting fertility and abundance for all beings including plants, animals and humans.  We look forward to sharing stories of this beautiful gathering with you and telling you more about Pukllay (pronounced Puh-he-ay) in next month's Words of Andean Wisdom.

Kusi Kawsay is committed to sustaining Andean tradition and culture through education, agriculture and celebration of the Andean Calendar.

Join us on our journey of good living, reciprocity and creating healthy, strong and empowered communities.
