The seismic hazard generated by faults slipping in large earthquakes and the need to mitigate the risk for nearby exposed populations and infrastructures requires scientists to seek a better understanding of the physics of faulting and the near-surface response to earthquake shaking.
On August 24th 2016 a ML 6.0 earthquake struck a sector of the central Apennines (Italy) between the towns of Amatrice and Norcia (Figure 1) causing heavy damages in the area and nearly 300 fatalities.

The 35th General Assembly Meeting of the ESC was held from 5 to 9 September 2016 in the beautiful town of Trieste, during very nice weather (with some strong wind in between…).
THREE EPOS IP PROJECT BOARDS MEETINGS ALREADY ORGANIZED IN OCTOBER In the first part of October, a year from the EPOS IP project kickoff the Project Management Office (PMO) and the Project Development Board ( PDB ) have organized three important meetings with its official board members: the Implementation Phase Council (IPC meeting 5-6 October 2016, in Madrid), the Service Coordination Board (SCB meeting, 7 October in Madrid) and the National Scientific Representatives (BNSR meeting 17-18 october in Dublin). During these meetings the status of EPOS IP and the next steps towards the Implementation of Thematic Core Services and their integration have been discussed, namely the TCS-ICS validation methodology and criteria as well as the technical, governance, legal and financial progress and achievements.
7TH EPOS IP BOARD OF GOVERNMENTAL REPRESENTATIVES MEETING, VIENNA, 3-4 NOVEMBER 2016
The EPOS IP Board of Governmental Representatives (BGR) will meet for the 7th time at the ARCOTEL Wimberger hotel in Vienna (Austria) the 3rd and 4th November 2016.
The BGR meeting will tackle key issues deemed essential to allow EPOS maintaining its goals and roadmap.
The main goal is to discuss and approve the timeline for the EPOS-ERIC legal establishment: EPOS is close to submit to the European Commition (EC) the documents for creating the European Research Infrastructure Consortium.
In particular the Governmental Representatives will discuss the EPOS Scientific and Technical Description, the updated version of the EPOS-ERIC Statutes and the updated version of the EPOS Financial plan with the TCS sustainability assessment.
2ND EPOS ADVISORY BOARD TELECONFERENCE, 25 OCTOBER 2016
The EPOS Implementation Phace project Advisory Board (AB) members met on a first teleconference on May 3rd, 2016 and in this occasion established, with the Project Management office, their role, the working methodology as well as the timetable of the next meeting, to be organized in Autumn. Following this timetable the second Advisory Board teleconference is scheduled on 25th October 2016.
The EPOS IP Advisory Board members, who has been selected by the EPOS Project Development Board (PDB) among outstanding scientists, representatives from global scientific projects and managers from private sectors, can give their support, suggestions and comments to the management and governance of the Implementation Phase Project of the EPOS infrastructure.
The EPOS IP project Coordinator and the Project Director will discuss with the AB members the progress and the achievements of the EPOS IP project after the first year of the activity.
EPOS @ GEOXIII PLENARY ASSEMBY, ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, 7-10 NOVEMBER 2016 EPOS will participate to the GEO-XIII Plenary and Exhibition which will be held at the Park Inn by Radisson Pribaltiyskaya hotel in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation from the 7th to 10th November 2016. GEO is a voluntary partnership of governments and organizations that envisions "a future wherein decisions and actions for the benefit of humankind are informed by coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations and information". GEO Member governments include 102 nations and the European Commission, and 103 Participating Organizations comprised of international bodies with a mandate in Earth observations, and EPOS is one of these.
The GEO-XIII Plenary in St. Petersburg will highlight global collaboration and the GEO's important role in supporting communities in their efforts to help measure and monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Global Agenda. https://www.earthobservations.org/geo13.php
W3C AND VRE4EIC WORKSHOP: SMART DESCRIPTIONS AND SMARTER VOCABULARIES (SDSVOC) 30 NOVEMBER - 1 DECEMBER 2016, IN AMSTERDAM
W3C in conjunction with the EU funded project VRE4EIC is organizing the Smart Descriptions & Smarter Vocabularies (SDSVoc) Workshop, that will be held at the CWI, Amsterdam Science Park, the 30th of November and the 1st of December 2016.
This workshop aims to clarify the steps needed to improve communication between data repositories and applications that use that data, such as virtual research environments.
A further aim is to explore how W3C can best support vocabulary development for a variety of communities.
EPOS members of the TCS technical staff are invited to join the W3C workshop. All EPOS metadata and architecture related work is in line with the topics of the workshop. The W3C workshop will be a good opportunity for EPOS for having a trans-national impact. Info: https://www.w3.org/2016/11/sdsvoc/
The event is open and free to all. The 25 November 2016 is the deadline for registration.
ORFEUS ANNUAL OBSERVATORY COORDINATION MEETING, 25 - 28 OCTOBER 2016, DUBROVNIK, CROATIA The ORFEUS annual Observatory Coordination meeting 2016 will be organized together with (and followed by) an EPOS IP WP8-Seismology Workshop on OBS (Ocean Bottom Seismometers) and Mobile Seismic Pools (MSP) coordination from the 25th to 28th October 2016 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, at the Hotel Neptun.
As ORFEUS is the Infrastructure for seismic waveform data within EPOS-IP the WP8 participants are strongly encouraged to participate in this workshop, in particular from the OBS and MSP communities.
The goal of the 2016 ORFEUS Annual Observatory Coordination meeting is to provide network and station operators an opportunity to meet, exchange and discuss experiences and knowledge on recent and current developments in e.g. seismic network operations, data management and exchange and community tools; to efficiently integrate data from these communities within the European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA: www.orfeus-eu.org/eida), a key infrastructure of ORFEUS and EPOS architectures.
The combined 2016 meeting will specifically focus on the following topics:
enhanced collaboration between ORFEUS and the seismic networks in the Balkan region;
recent developments in network and data centre operations;
the AlpArray seismic network deployment;
enhanced coordination between the Mobile Seismic Pools (MSP) and Ocean Bottom
