What do you do when a new gospel shows up on the scene?

Some scholars have called the Gospel of Thomas “the fifth gospel,” joining the four canonical books of the New Testament—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Some have even suggested that a new and fresh perspective on the teachings of Jesus can be observed in its extraordinary aphorisms, dialogues, and parables.

This ancient collection of Jesus sayings, half of which were previously unknown, opens up a whole new area of research for Biblical scholars. And yet, the Gospel of Thomas was rejected by the early Christian Church, banished to oblivion, and eventually lost to memory. William G. Duffy’s book is the first of its kind to thoroughly and systematically examine this gospel’s “hidden” sayings in the light of non-dualism, the timeless worldview and philosophy of oneness. What is particularly unique about Duffy’s work is the meticulous literary analysis he brings to this study. In his investigation of each saying, he has discovered phrase patterns and code words that other commentators have seemingly missed.

About the Author

William G. Duffy, known to his family and friends as "George," is a retired Mental Health Counselor living in upstate New York. He has studied and written on the Gospel of Thomas for over thirty-six years. His conviction that Thomas can be understood only in a non-dual context has been inspired and sustained by a variety of influences. These include a wide range of scholarly works on Biblical and non-canonical scripture, Christian mysticism, and the wealth of material, both ancient and modern, arising from eastern traditions. As a boy in Cortland, New York, he attended a Catholic elementary and secondary school under the tutelage of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. He is a graduate of Syracuse University (BA) and the University of Toronto (BEd). He is a long-time, associate member of the Westar Institute. When he is not thinking, writing, or speaking about the Gospel of Thomas, he is enjoying the company of his extended and extensive family, playing golf, or quietly walking the hills and valleys near his home in New York.
