ESIP UPDATE: May 31, 2016
Good morning ESIP,
A few reminders: (1) Today is the last day for SciDataCon posters and paper submissions; (2) Please fill out the ESIP Evaluation Survey; this is an opportunity for you to provide feedback on ESIP's strengths, areas to improve, impacts and infrastructure; and (3) Research as Art submissions are due next week, June 5.
As always, if you have any items you'd like to see included in the next update, contact me at annieburgess@esipfed.org. Have a great week!
View ESIP's meeting calendar here. All call-in information is linked from the calendar.
Meeting News 2016 Summer Meeting Schedule The draft schedule for the 2016 ESIP Summer Meeting is now available! Please note that we are using a new scheduling interface. We encourage you to try it out and let us know what you think. A few things to note:
For more information about how to interact with the new schedule, check out the how-to guide here.
Research as Art: Call for Submissions **Deadline this Sunday** At this year’s Summer Meeting we'll hold a Research as Art event on the evening of Wednesday, July 20, instead of the traditional Summer Meeting poster session. Our goal is to encourage the ESIP community to use visual media to communicate their data and research; and to think about their research as an ongoing narrative that can be told through visual media.
Submissions will be accepted through June 5. Read the submission instructions and submit your entry here.
Federation News ESIP Evaluation Survey ESIP is embarking on an organizational evaluation process, which is internally driven. The staff and leadership feel that although things are going well, it is important to reflect and check in with the community.
The primary goal of this effort is to determine how best to position ESIP, which enters its third decade in 2018, to achieve the greatest impact, to align structures and resources to support this direction, and to chart a course for sustainable, long-term growth and success. A key part of this process is to gain a deeper understanding of the Federation's current operating environment, and where strategic opportunities—and challenges—may lie.
Testbed Request for Proposals: Deadline Extended The ESIP Products and Services Committee announces a deadline extension for Testbed projects. Projects for this call should focus on innovative and collaborative implementation of new ideas and technologies, in keeping with the strong tradition of Testbed projects pursued in the past. ESIP works through the Testbed to provide resources to support such projects throughout the project lifecycle. This proposal round offers three project types: incubator projects (proofs of concept), prototype projects (extension of a more mature projects), and fast-track projects (improvements to the Testbed evaluation efforts). Details about these project types and how to propose are in the attachment below. If you have any questions, please send questions to the Testbed Configuration Board at tcb@esipfed.org.
Proposals may be submitted by any ESIP organization, an individual within such an organization, or a team of such individuals. Civil servants are restricted from receiving ESIP funds.
Congratulations to ESIP Student Fellow Sophie Hou ESIP Student Fellow Sophie Hou was awarded the Jane B. and Robert B. Downs Professional Promise Award. The professors who nominated Sophie for this award saw how she has taken what she has learned at the Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship and applied it to the practice of scientific data curation. Sophie has an impressive focus combined with a voracious curiosity. She looks at theories, methods, and insights and considers how they might be used to make the sharing of scientific data better and less burdensome. This brings the sharing of ethos of librarianship to the very modern setting of twenty-first century global collaborative climate science research.
Around the Federation SciDataCon Abstracts **Due TODAY** Call for abstracts for papers and posters at SciDataCon 2016. Submit your abstract to any of the 48 accepted sessions or to the general submission through the SciDataCon 2016 website. Please consult the guidelines for papers and for posters very carefully and consider the scope of the Conference. Posters will be grouped according to the themes and the sessions to which they relate, and thus dealt with in the same way as papers.
New AGU Data Blog Posts Last week two posts were added to our AGU series on data. Shelley Stall discussed the growing importance of scientific data managers, and the need for better understanding and recognition of this job. In the second post, a group from the EarthCube National Office wrote about Flyover Country, a new app for geosciences outreach and data discovery.
