Parents May Help Create Their Very Own Narcissists

Brad Bushman, professor, communication; and Eddie Brummelman, University of Amsterdam, surveyed parents and their children over one-and-a-half years to see if they could identify which factors led children to have inflated views of themselves. Their finding: parents who “overvalued” their children ended up with children who scored higher on tests of narcissism later on. The study appears in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Microbiologist Selected Professional Society Distinguished Lecturer 

Mike Ibba, professor and chair, microbiology, has been selected by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) to serve a two-year term: July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2017 as ASM Distinguished Lecturer. ASM annually selects, via a rigorous, competitive process, a group of the nation’s outstanding microbiologists to deliver lectures at ASM branch meetings throughout the country. Ibba researches mechanisms determining how cells ensure accurate translation of the genetic code and how changes in underlying processes impact cellular health, which contributes to microbial pathogenesis and disease. Many of these processes are essential and unique to particular systems, making them ideal potential drug targets.

Voigt Awarded Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant 

Lisa Voigt, associate professor, Spanish and Portuguese, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant. Voigt will be affiliated with the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal, where she will be a visiting researcher at the Center for Overseas History during 2015-16. Voigt will be conducting research at the National Library and other libraries and archives for her book project, “Performing Global Cultures in Early Modern Portuguese Festivals.”

Political Science Professor Wins 2015 ISSS Best Book Award

The book, Power in Concert: The Nineteenth Century Origins of Global Governance, by Jennifer Mitzen, associate professor, political science, was selected winner of the 2015 ISSS Best Book Award, given by the International Security Studies Section of the International Studies Association (ISA).

Michael Mercil Presents Inaugural Lecture

As part of the Arts and Humanities Inaugural Lecture series, Michael Mercil, professor, Department of Art, presents “An Artist in a Public University” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. A reception accompanies the lecture; free and open to all. The multimedia presentation of recent Living Culture Initiative projects focuses on Mercil’s use of the Ohio State campus as his artist’s studio.

Documentary Exploring Racism and Teens to be Screened

The feature documentary film, I’m Not Racist. . . Am I?, about the next generation and racism, will be shown Monday, March 23 in Mershon Auditorium. A reception is planned 4:30-5:15 p.m. with the film screening and a discussion with the filmmakers 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to all. In the documentary, 12 New York City teenagers come together during one school year to talk about race and privilege in a series of workshops and in conversations with friends and family members.

Bebe Miller Presents Book Talk

Dance Fort — a new i-book — is an intimate look at the inner workings of the Bebe Miller Company and the creative process behind its production, A History, told through rehearsal videos, journal notes, email exchanges and more. Bebe Miller, Distinguished Professor, Arts and Humanities, and professor in dance, presents an inside look into Dance Fort as an interactive archive; the talk is Thursday, April 2, 4-5 p.m., 220 Sullivant Hall. Reception follows in the Sullivant Hall Rotunda.

Critical Difference Professional Development Grants

Professional Development and Women of Color Advancement Grants are available for women faculty and staff employed by Ohio State for at least one year, as well as graduate/professional students with a 3.0 GPA and undergraduates with a 2.5 GPA. Applications due March 26.
