The Rise and Fall of the Rat Bar

Ohio’s cold, long winter nights depress many. But John Carroll students, especially those during the 1970s and early '80s, gravitated toward a beacon of comfort and enjoyment on those nights after their classes and studies. That symbolic beacon was the Rathskeller, more affectionately known as the Rat Bar. It was a place that provided a cultural atmosphere for students and faculty, giving them a place to socialize, watch sports, listen to live music, and simply relax without leaving campus.
