Dear Book Club Members,
My name is Lauren Francis-Sharma and I am the author of both ‘Til the Well Runs Dry, winner of the 2014 Black Caucus of the American Library Association Honor Award, as well as the recently released Book of the Little Axe. The American Library Association has recently announced Book of the Little Axe as its 2020 “Libraries Transform Book Pick,” which means that from September 14-28th, library card holders in the United States will be able to download my novel for free from participating libraries! I am thrilled about this selection and I am writing to ask if you would like to join me in a new project I’m calling “58 Book Clubs to Freedom!”

In 1797 the British government overtook the Spanish occupied island of Trinidad. Book of the Little Axe tells the story of a free Black woman caught in the crosshairs of this new colonial power who eventually makes her way to North America where she finds love and community within an indigenous tribe. Elizabeth Nunez says that Book of the Little Axe “is an intoxicating tale of intrigue, love, conflict and struggle that shines a bright light on the little-known connections between the Caribbean and the United States” and Debra Magpie Earling says that the novel “is a shimmering epic that forges new paths into the old territory of the American West.”
My hope with this book was to merge the thrill of a woman-centered western with the immersive experience of historical fiction. My “58 Book Clubs to Freedom” is a campaign that will virtually bring 58 book clubs into my living room from August 31, 2020, Trinidad’s Independence Day, to October 12, 2020, Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It might be a perfect opportunity to reinvigorate your book club with a free download and me as your guest! I hope you’ll choose to join me for what I expect will be a fun endeavor!
