Former U.S. Deputy Surgeon General to Serve as New School of Public Health Dean

The University of Maryland welcomes Dr. Boris D. Lushniak as dean of the School of Public Health. Dr. Lushniak will join the University of Maryland from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland, where he serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics, and Professor of Dermatology, F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine. He will officially assume his new role on Jan. 9, 2017. Read more >>

Extreme Heat Linked to Increased Hay Fever among U.S. Adults

Hay fever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects 17.6 million adults in the United States and results in $11.2 billion in related medical expenses. A new study by University of Maryland School of Public Health researchers shows that exposure to more frequent “extreme heat events” increases the prevalence of hay fever among US adults. Read more >>

Attitudes and Laws Relax, Even as Research Links Marijuana Use to Negative Educational Outcomes

Nine states, including the District of Columbia, have legalized recreational marijuana -- with still more allowing cannabis for medical use. Dr. Kleinman to Co-Chair HHS Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Advisory Committee

Dushanka V. Kleinman, Associate Dean for Research in the University of Maryland School of Public Health, was appointed by the Department of Health and Human Services to co-chair the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030.  Read more >>

Center for Health Literacy Welcomes Dr. Cynthia Baur as New Director

Beginning in January 2017, Cynthia Baur, PhD, will take the helm as the new Endowed Professor and Director of the Horowitz Center for Health Literacy. Dr. Baur is internationally known as an intellectual, research and policy leader in health literacy. 


SPH Students Recognized with Merrill Presidential Scholarships

Sana Haider (BCH) and Kurt Hufker (KNES) received the prestigious 2016-17 Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar award. The program honors the University of Maryland’s most successful seniors, who in turn select University faculty and K-12 teachers to recognize for their mentorship. Read more >>

Christopher King (PhD, '13) Talks Health Disparities on WAMU's Kojo Nnamdi Show 

Dr. Christopher King, an alumnus and lecturer in the Department of Health Services Administration, spoke on NPR about his research, which found that African-American men in D.C. have a 15 year shorter life expectancy than their white peers. He and other guests explored the roots of the disparities that still exist and what localities are, or could, be doing to address them. Read more >>

UMD Students Design New Prince George’s County Health Center for Underserved Population

A new “Fearless Ideas” course led by School of Public Health faculty is turning a group of 15 UMD undergraduate students into researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs tasked with reimagining our broken healthcare system. Central to the course is the Catholic Charities-Susan D. Mona Center project, also a collaboration with the SPH Maryland Center for Health Equity, now under construction in Temple Hills, Md.  Read more >>
