2015 AMWA INTERIM MEETING

AMWA's 101st Annual Meeting

NATIONAL LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

2016-2017 National Conference Co-chairs position

  • Two applicants will be selected to serve as our AMWA national conference chairs for the 2017 Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
  • This highly esteemed position offers you the opportunity to demonstrate and apply the breadth of talents you possess. Given that the chairs will play a vital part of our biggest event of the year, the chairs-designate will be supported with one-on-one mentorship to further refine their leadership skills.
  • Coordinate with AMWA headquarters to plan the Annual Meeting Student Division content and logistics as well as accommodations for student attendees.
  • Serve on the AMWA Conference Planning Committee.
  • Work with the Treasurer to coordinate grant-writing to subsidize costs.

Interim Region 7 Director

  • Region 7 states: AR, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, OK, and SD
  • Update and maintain region’s local leadership contact information
  • Organize new branches at medical schools that do not have an active branch
  • Hold a regional conference, regional retreat, or other event at some point in the year with the help of the Regional Event Grant.
  • Generate and distribute a quarterly regional student newsletter
  • Call in to the monthly Regional Student Meetings and update the national leadership on your successes and achievements.
  • Email your one paragraph personal statement to secretary@amwa-student.org

LGBTQA Student Chair

  • The LGBTQA section of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee is looking for student members including a student chair.
  • Remember the A stands for Allies and we would love to have more committee members from both LGBT groups and Allies.
  • We are working on a position paper for AMWA.
  • We have also gotten an excellent film called States of Grace about a Lesbian physician and her struggle to accept her new disabled body.

MEET THE ADVOCACY CHAIR

Lisa Rotenstein is a third year MD/MBA Candidate at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School. As Co-President of AMWA she organized events to enhance women’s negotiation skills and expose them to varying career paths in medicine, such as management, research, biotech innovation, and primary care. She is also involved with Harvard’s Joint Committee for the Status of Women, including its Salary Equity Task Force.

AMWA CHAPTERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
LUCOM Mentors and Inspires Youth
The Advocates of Peace Girls Mentoring Program participated in the recent "Minority Women In Medicine" workshop at Jubilee! Learn more about the diverse group of female students from Liberty University's College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) who spoke about what it takes to get accepted into medical school.
 
Stony Brook School of Medicine
At the end of August, Stony Brook held their annual mentoring pot luck and matched about 80 medical students to mentors in fields in which they are interested. Students were able to not only speak to their mentors, but also socialize with peers and receive valuable advice from the physicians present.
 
Attention Chicago Students! The 5th Annual Chicago Food Week is happening Monday Oct 19th-25th in downtown Chicago. Chicago Food Day is an annual event, promoting information and inspiration you need to start eating healthy, sustainable, real foods instead of processed foods. Join the national movement to eat healthy and visit www.chicago.foodday.org for more info!
Make sure your branch is active this month!
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Check out the DVAM e-toolkit for ways your local chapter can get involved in promoting awareness this month! Questions? Email advocacy@amwa-student.org

Also, it's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Health Literacy Awareness Month, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and World Mental Health Day is October 10th.
