Health Tips for the Holidays

Wow! Christmas is here. It seems like only yesterday I was visiting India and ended up on crutches.  This year just flew by.  My mom used to say that time and tide wait on no one. Guess she was right.  I hope as this year comes to a close that you were able to accomplish most of what you planned at the beginning.  For me it has been a year of tremendous change. My fall in February allowed me to reassess my life and motivated me to work on some projects that I had been putting off for some time. I used the down time to review all areas of my life and chart a new course.  So far, so good. I’m looking forward to the New Year with anticipation of the great things that I have projected into the future. 
As the year comes to a close I’ll do my usual review and create a renewed tomorrow for 2014.  I suggest that you also pause and reflect on the past year. Look at the lessons you have learnt from the successes and challenges you encountered.  Create a big vision of the future for yourself and draft a plan to make your wishes come true.  If you had created a vision board during the year, take a look at it and see what still has to be accomplished. Renew your vision. Dream big dreams and create a plan for their fulfillment in 2014. 
As you create your plan remember to immediately take some action step to let Nature know that you are serious. But most of all have a Merry Christmas. Celebrate life, living and offer gratitude for all that you have.

Staying healthy during the Holidays

With all the wonderful dishes being prepared and the endless parties to attend it is easy to put on a few extra pounds during the holidays. But you can still have fun, eat healthy and beat the scales if you follow some simple guidelines.

  1. Start your day with a full body stretch such as the sun salute. Jump on the spot. Touch your toes. This will help to get your circulation moving. Then follow up with meditation and some prayers of gratitude. This will set the mood for your day.
  2. Plan your meals to include fruits and dark green vegetables such as apples, berries, papaya, mushrooms, broccoli, spinach and pineapples. They all help to combat inflammation.
  3. Super foods such as blueberries, flax seeds, chia seeds, low fat yoghurt will help fight belly fat and keep you looking slim.
  4. Have a big breakfast. Even if you do not feel hungry it is good not to skip breakfast. A common saying is that in order to stay healthy,  we should eat breakfast like a king, lunch as a prince and dinner like a pauper. Start your day with something hot to drink. A cup of hot water or tea will get your metabolism moving.
  5. Skip the bagels, cinnamon buns and other sugary stuff especially at breakfast. Instead choose some organic whole grain cereals and/or yogurt. You can add some walnuts,almond and cranberries or blueberries to either your cereal or yogurt.  Or try some eggs and other protein with a slice of whole grain bread or a protein vegetable fruit shake. These are not only healthy but will give you energy and keep you satisfied for longer periods.
  6. Skip the fruit juices. Eat the fruit and drink water. Fruit juices are generally loaded with sugar. The average 8 oz glass of fruit juice contains between 26 and 32 grams of sugar per serving depending on the brand.  25 grams of sugar is equivalent to 6 teaspoons of sugar!  So it’s healthier to eat the whole fruit with all the fiber and other nutrients than drink the commercial juices. Have an apple or some berries and drink some water.  
  7. Get up and dance. Dancing is a good way to get in some exercise while you are at a party. Dancing helps circulate the energy around the body and will improve your mood.

Pumpkin Pancakes
Here is a healthy pancake from Martha Stewart you can make. It has only 133 calories and 3.3g of sugar per serving so you can eat two!
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup ground chia seeds (can use flax meal)
1 tablespoon of sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
pinch of ground cloves
1 cup 2 percent milk
6 tablespoons canned pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 egg
1.    In a large bowl whisk together all the dry ingredients.
2.    In a separate bowl, stir together milk, pumpkin puree, oil, and egg.
3.    Fold wet mixture into dry ingredients.
4.    Oil a skillet over medium heat; pour in 1/4 cup batter for each pancake. Cook pancakes about 3 minutes per side; serve with toasted pecans and maple yogurt.
Makes between 8 and 10 pancakes.
