Shop Our Newest Acquisition!

Rittenhouse Needlepoint is proud to announce that it has acquired Barbara Russell's line of beloved canvases!!

Barbara Russell was renowned for creating beautiful needlepoint canvases for over 40 years.  Famous for her dog designs, Barbara Russell also offered designs that include birds, wildflowers, and jazz-related images.  These designs and others (over 470) are now available exclusively through Rittenhouse Needlepoint.

Take a look at our Barbara Russell offerings on, or come in to see them in person if you live in the Philadelphia area. We look forward to helping you select one of these unique canvases (and, of course, accompanying fiber) today!

Movin' On Up To the East Side
(Well, a Little Further East Anyway)

We're moving!!  (But, don't worry, local friends, we're not going far.)  Our new home will be at  1216 Arch Street, about eight blocks from our current location and right by Philadelphia's famous Reading Terminal Market.  (So now you can get needlepoint AND lots of food!)
The new store will have more square footage (so that we have even more room to serve all your stitch-related needs and desires).  Our finishing department has already moved over to their new digs and they love having more space in which to work on your projects.  Please keep your eyes peeled for upcoming newsletter updates on the status of our new space and our moving plans.
In the meantime, please enjoy this video of our new space.

March Trunk Shows: Voila! and Mindy

Visiting us from sunny Boca Raton, Susan Karten's Voila! canvases are here in our shop through the end of March. Voila! has an extensive line of hand painted canvases, including unique belts, handbags, flasks, and key chain fobs.  These fun projects offer a colorful variety of animal, floral, and geometric designs.

Also this month, we have a trunk show of small canvases from Mindy Needlepoint.
Completing a large project like a pillow provides a wonderful sense of accomplishment.  But completing one (or several) small projects can feel just as good.  Holiday ornaments are a common go-to small project, but what if you're a bit holidayed-out or don't want to think about December again quite yet?  Solution: one of Mindy's charming insets for a Lee Designs box, wallet, or clutch.  These items offer 'sense of accomplishment' in a small-but-mighty package.  Because the canvas inserts measure approximately 3" x 5" (or smaller), they can stitch up quickly, but they offer plenty of room to express non-basketweave stitches and/or unique fiber choices
(or perhaps even a bead or sequin or two!).

Pairing these inserts with any of our snazzy fibers will create fun-to-use (and stunning to stare at) items that would make great gifts for yourself (or even other people, if you're into that kind of thing).  Because the items are designed to be inserted into ready-made products, they require minimal finishing.  Stop by our shop or visit to see more of these fun little projects.

Coming in April: Lycette (contemporary designs) and EyeCandy.  Stay tuned for more information in our April newsletter and on social media.
Stitch of the Month: Nobuko

With its gentle waving feel, Nobuko stitch is great for creating skies, lakes, or any background area that deserves a little
pop or pizzazz.   Consider these few examples of how the stitch can work with various fibers (for your viewing pleasure):

Fiber Highlight

If you're ever in Philly, we'd love to have you visit the store and see our wonderful line-up of over 70 different fibers.  For those of you who aren't nearby, we are spotlighting one of our awesome fibers in each newsletter.  For this edition, we are focusing on DMC Color Infusions Memory Thread.

One of our newer staff members has a bit of a Christmas-ornament addiction (which we fully support and enable).  While she has a large project underway at any given time, she enjoys the thrill of a quick-stitch project that she can play with while watching TV or watching her Chihuahuas nap.
(They nap a lot, so she needs a lot a needlepoint
to keep her hands busy.)

Basketweave stitch is her staple stitch if she wants to work a project quickly, but she still wants to give her little projects a pop of flare.

Back stitch is an easy way to smooth out straight edges or outline a particular figure in a piece.  But what if you want to introduce more three-dimensionality to the work?  The DMC Memory Thread allows you to outline something on a canvas, while also giving the outline a "raised up" look.  The fiber comes in many colors and is worked by laying it on top of the canvas and then anchoring it down using a tonally matched embroidery floss.  It takes a few stitches to get the fiber to start to sit politely on the canvas, but once you are several stitches in, it becomes quite easy.

And We Stitch Too!

Have a project that you want to get completed, but life is getting in the way of your needlepoint?  (I hate when that happens.)  We have a posse of talented in-house stitchers who can help to complete a project for you.  (You can still brag about all the work you did on your piece -- our lips are sealed.)  The fee for this type of work varies with the size of the project, how much needs to be completed, and the complexity of the stitching that is required.
Please email to discuss pricing.
