Dear Bigelow parents and friends, I hope you can join me at my home (150 Hunnewell Ave) Tuesday, January 15, from 7:30-8:30 p.m., to discuss Big Night planning! There are so many ways to get involved. It can be anything from spending an hour to pick up donated auction items to being in charge of coordinating the set up volunteers on the night of the event. The Big Night Committee is grateful for any involvement, no matter what it is, as so many folks are needed to help with this most important fundraiser for Bigelow. Please feel free to email me at kmarkson@gmail.com if you have any questions and I hope to see you on Tuesday! Sincerely, Karen Markson
The winter version of “Laps at Lunch” is “Steps at Lunch”. Parents and guardians in the Bigelow community are invited to help out, giving our students the opportunity to get outside in front of the school in the cooler months, whenever it’s a nice day. If interested please contact Mary Fitzgerald (physical education teacher) at: Mary_Fitzgerald@newton.k12.ma.us. More about the program here.
Be a lasting part of the Underwood Owl Courtyard with a personalized commemorative brick! Located next to the school by the Underwood blacktop (see below), former, current and future Underwood families will be able to see your words of support and appreciation every day when you engrave a brick for our Owl Courtyard. Bricks purchased in the winter of 2018 will be placed during the spring of 2019. Funds raised will continue to fund our Creative Arts and Science Program as well as keeping up with technology changes.
Together, we will craft a beautiful patio to commemorate the diverse Underwood community and create a courtyard to congregate for years to come!
The Bigelow Postural Screening will be January 22nd for students whose parents choose to have the screening. If you would like the school nurse to look at your child, please contact Nurse Schy: sue_schy@newton.k12.ma.us.
Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. c.71, s.57) require that all public school students in grades five through nine be screened annually for the early detection of spinal problems. This is not a diagnostic service but a screening program to identify children who should have further medical evaluation.
The screening consists of observations of the student’s back when standing and bending forward and will be done by a school nurse or Physical Education, Health and Wellness teacher. If your child has any unusual findings, you will be notified and asked to have your child seen by a health care provider. For more information, contact Nurse Schy: sue_schy@newton.k12.ma.us.
