See what we have been up to this month!
Dear Valued Customer,

Spring has finally arrived, and HeinOnline is pleased to welcome the new season with an incredible March update. Tons of content has been packed into 700,000 pages, including more than 120 new titles in the U.S. Attorney General & Department of Justice Collection. Nearly 2,800 titles were added, 50 databases were updated, and a milestone has been reached: HeinOnline now contains more than 145 million pages!

March also marked the release of the new HeinOnline Knowledge Base. It’s full-text searchable, and contains training guides, videos, and hundreds of categorized articles on searching and navigating HeinOnline.

Check out the video series by Quimbee, which provides an overview of everything HeinOnline in 25 digestible tutorials. The HeinOnline Blog and wrapper websites have also been streamlined for a simple, clean, and easy-to-navigate experience.

We would like to thank the Maryland State Law Library for their significant and generous contribution to the Slavery in America and the World database. More than 50 titles were added to the database this month. In addition, two new titles from Michigan State University have been added to the Animal Studies: Law, Welfare and Rights database. The titles are authored by MSU Professor of Law David Favre, who has written several articles and books dealing with animal issues including such topics as animal cruelty, wildlife law, the use of animals for scientific research, and international control of animal trade.

We also released a brand new database—Multinational Sources Compared: A Subject and Jurisdiction Index. This is a unique finding aid designed to direct researchers to sources that compare multiple jurisdictions on focused subjects; it's available in both print and database formats, exclusively in HeinOnline.

Please continue reading for additional details about March content additions, and stay tuned for more new database and enhanced content announcements in future newsletters.

MULTINATIONAL SOURCES COMPARED: A SUBJECT AND JURISDICTION INDEX

By Alena L. Wolotira & Sherry L. Leysen

A unique finding aid designed to direct researchers to sources that compare multiple jurisdictions on focused subjects is now available in both print and database formats, exclusively in HeinOnline.

Now includes:
  • Online companion database
  • Product reviews
  • Jurisdiction indexes
  • Expanded list of data points for bibliographic entries
  • 280 subjects
Multinational Sources Compared: A Subject and Jurisdiction Index by Alena L. Wolotira and Sherry L. Leysen is an impressive collection of detailed bibliographic records and is based on Professor Jon Schultz’s Statutes Compared: A U.S., Canadian, Multinational Research Guide to Statutes by Subject (2nd edition, 2001) and Multinational Statutes Compared: A Research Guide to Statutes by Subject (2003). The updated title includes works published or updated from 2011 to date, and the database will be updated three times annually to maintain currency.

Expanded Subject List

Since much has changed in legal publishing since 2003, the scope and nature of the content contained in Multinational Sources Compared: A Subject and Jurisdiction Index necessitated the change to its current title. Both the print and electronic versions contain full-text legislation, statutory citations, or other references to primary law. Subjects new to this product include Animal Law, Corporate Immigration, Freedom of Speech, Human Rights, and many more.

To create this one-of-a-kind resource, the authors consulted English-language legal information publishers and sifted through their product offerings. They checked tables of contents and publishers’ product descriptions, and also reviewed titles that were in print to compile each resource’s jurisdiction list.

New Companion Database

The database component of this title, which will be updated three times annually, is simple and convenient to use. The database homepage features an introduction and the option to browse the content by title, publisher, subject, or jurisdiction; the predecessor print editions by Jon Schultz are also available in HeinOnline’s image-based PDF format. Search fields provide the ability to search database records by text, title, publisher, jurisdiction, and more. The main search bar, located at the top of the page, can be used to search all print and database content simultaneously:

Pricing

This incredible resource, which is composed of both the print edition and companion HeinOnline database, is available for $225.00. We are offering a 15% discount for subscribers of either National Survey of State Laws or Subject Compilations of State Laws, so be sure to take advantage of these savings!

Finding English Law: Quick Access to Key Titles

Finding English Law: Quick Access to Key Titles provides a listing of current and informative books on nearly one hundred topics of English law. Each list is preceded by an instructive 'thumbnail' description of the legal subject giving the researcher an outline of the rudiments of the topic, by way of a quick description, a discussion of the topic's component parts, and the details of any legislative provisions which guide the law of that subject. Each of the listings of titles orients the reader toward a roster of important titles of all types, from those written for public and student consumption, through practitioner-oriented works to the academic and theoretical. Researchers from outside the United Kingdom will find the topic descriptions and listings most useful and those based in the UK will find utility in a current, wide-ranging list of legal titles.

AIIP REVIEW: HEINONLINE

As a leading voice of the independent information industry, Association of Independent Information Professions (AIIP) is an essential resource for its more than 400 information professional members located in over 20 countries around the world.

The members are thought leaders in their field who frequently write about, speak about, and recommend the products and services they use. Experts in their respective fields, AIIP members have written books, contributed chapters to books, written white papers for major companies, and/or are editors of journals, magazines, and serial publications. Many of the members’ publications are considered seminal works.

For the March issue, AIIP performed a thorough analysis of HeinOnline. Here are some excepts:

"A staple in law firms, government agencies and academia, Hein is a cornucopia of legal research treasures. Principally known for its library of law reviews—with coverage dating back to most titles’ inceptions—researchers will also find statutes; regulations; case law; Congressional documents; foreign legal materials; and more."

"Markedly less expensive than LexisNexis, Westlaw, and Bloomberg BNA, Hein regularly proves irresistible to research shops with tight budgets."
