Tell Your START Story
On Sunday night, April 30, the 2017 START National Training Institute (SNTI) will open with “START Talks: Community Building through Stories of Hope.” Inspired by TED Talks, “START Talks” will be an opportunity for START team members to share their stories of hope with our network and celebrate the positive impact that START programs make in communities across the country
We are inviting 6 START team members to share their story.
Here are some details:
  • Your "START Talk" only needs to be 6 - 10 minutes in length
  • This will be a casual speaking environment, no panel, no Q&A, no powerpoints
  • You can nominate yourself or one of your peers (nominating someone will not obligate them to speak, it will just trigger us to reach out)
  • Nominations must be received by March 8, 2017 (2 weeks)
  • All Nominees will receive a special SNTI gift
Topics & themes to consider:
  • What brought you here (to the SNTI, to START, to the field of IDD/MH), what positive impact has it made, and why is it important to talk about it now?
  • How has START touched your life or the lives of those you support?
  • How has an individual you’ve supported changed your perspective?
  • How have adversities turned into successes through the use of strength-based practices?
  • What situations or events changed your thinking, made you have an “a-ha” moment?
Need some inspiration?
Watch Dan Habib’s TED Talk on Disabling Segregation. Dan is presenting a 2017 SNTI breakout session within the "Children and Families" content strand and screening a new film after the Awards Dinner on Monday night.

Ready to nominate yourself or a peer?
Fill out our simple START Talks Nomination Form. Remember, nominating someone does not in any way obligate them to speak, it'll just let us know that they have a great story to tell. Nominations must be received by March 8, 2017.
Please direct any and all questions to Beth Grosso at

We look forward to hearing your stories,
