Dr. Kopenhaver's Generous Donation

For more than three decades, Dr. Kopenhaver has been a tireless advocate for women in Communication and has pledged $750,000 to The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication. This donation supports the Kopenhaver Center’s mission of empowering women professionals and academics in the field. These funds contribute to the many programs that are designed specifically for women in Communication. Help us thank Dr. Kopenhaver by contributing to her efforts click here.

The College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) achieves great things every day. I am proud of the faculty, students, and staff that contribute to all that we do. These are only a few of the highlights from last month.


Dean's Leadership Advisory Board Spring Meeting

Lawrence Kline, Managing Director of the Perkins + Will Miami Branch, hosted the Spring Dean’s Leadership Advisory Board Meeting. Dean Schriner shared an exciting vision for the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts entitled “Our Future Is Now.”

CARTA Faculty Research and Creative Showcase

On Thursday, February 16, CARTA Faculty shared their research and creative projects. This was the first of two events this semester organized to support and promote research and creative activities. These events are designed to help share Faculty accomplishments and ambitions with other colleagues, cultivate a community of collaborators and succeed in funding your projects. Associate Dean Nepomechie Visits Bauhaus Dessau

Associate Dean Nepomechie recently participated in a productive planning workshop along with Claudia Perren, Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and representatives of Mana Wynwood and Mana Contemporary. Hosted by Dr. Perren, the workshop was held on the Dessau campus of the UNESCO World Heritage site.  It included tours of the Bauhaus buildings and afforded opportunities for continued planning of the collaboration between FIU and the Bauhaus Dessau, which will be housed at Mana Wynwood.

National Architectural Accreditation Board (NAAB) Visit

On Wednesday, February 22, 2017, the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) team concluded their visit of FIU’s School of Architecture with a positive meeting that included faculty and students.

FIU Global Strategic Communications Master's Degree Program Opens First South Florida Regan Conference

Global Strategic Communications master’s degree program served as the host of Ragan’s PR Measurement Conference earlier this month. Professor Fred Blevens Mentors Dow Jones News Fund Winners

The Dow Jones News Fund selected three high school journalists as winners of its 2016 Summer Journalism Workshops Scholarship Competition. Under Professor Fred Bleven’s direction high school students, Jessica Koernig, and Christopher Vazquez, won two out of three awards. Jessica won best photography while Christopher won Best Multimedia.

On April 1, 2017, FIU will celebrate the 16th anniversary of the Torch Awards Gala, a premier annual event where the University’s most outstanding alumni are recognized and celebrated for contributions to their fields, the community and their alma mater. This year, the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts is honoring Oscar E. Cordova ’85, an architecture graduate.
Proceeds from the event will support the future construction of the FIU Alumni Center, as well as FIU’s First Generation Scholarship Fund. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and will be held at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami. For more information, click here.

Alexander Perez | Architecture, '00

Miami represents a new frontier on architecture and approach, said architecture alumnus Alexander Perez, 00’ and principal and founder of JAYN Group, an architecture and construction management firm.

Perez said studying architecture of New York and European cities are the epicenter of inspiration for building design. Living in Miami he has seen the city during its infant stages of discovery and through it's evolution.

Bristol PR & Communications offers public relations or marketing entry-level

Responsibilities include assisting in developing and contributing to public relations and marketing activities; coordinating with news media as assigned, in development of appropriate news stories and maintain up-to-date tracking reports. Lineaire Designs opens internship position in Architecture or Interior Architecture in Downtown Miami

Responsibilities include assisting designers on all aspects of architectural and interior design work, from helping create construction documents to putting together client presentations. Permanent job opportunities are available after successful completion of the internship.
