Malawi Media Opportunity

Malawi is a developing country in Southern Africa. With one of the world’s poorest economies, the nation faces many challenges in health, education, infrastructure and more. Despite these issues, the national church is multiplying rapidly and reaching out in innovative ways.
National television was not introduced in Malawi until 1999. Only the government network and two private stations currently serve the nation's population of more than 10 million. International Christian Assembly, a growing congregation in the capital of Lilongwe, has applied to operate the city's first non-government TV broadcast station. When it goes on air, it will offer a significant channel for evangelism, inspiration, education and positive influence in this city of 1.2 million people and beyond.
To help prepare for the station's launch, Henry spent most of July in Malawi working with the ICA media team. An important element in the preparations was a two-week “Foundations of Video Production” seminar he taught. Twenty participants were introduced to critical components of program planning and production. Teams designed and created short programs to implement the instruction in practical, real-world settings. The professional training was the first of it’s kind ever offered in Malawi.

ICA is currently awaiting word from the Malawi broadcasting authority concerning their TV station application. While they wait, they are developing program content and plans for production facilities. Please pray with them for favor from the government and funding for urgently needed additional production equipment. Learn more about ICA.

Spanish Biblical Drama Videos

Video can be a powerful tool to help make the stories and events of the Bible come alive. One example is the Bible Stories Video Project created by International Media Ministries. The series of 30 dramatized segments visualize the experience of people who met Jesus, His parables, and significant points in the path of His ministry.

Though portions of the BSVP series have been produced in more than 20 languages, a Spanish version for use in Latin America had never been developed. When Missionary Quentin McGhee, the creator of the Faith and Action Series curriculum, saw the English videos he felt burdened that a Spanish series should be created. Faith and Action books are used extensively in training Latin American pastors and lay leaders, and he knew the video stories would be an excellent complement to their printed materials.

Quentin had no expertise in video production, so he contacted Henry to consult on the project. Henry committed to serve as the Producer of the Spanish version, overseeing script translation, video and audio recording, editing, and DVD development. Carlos Rey (Missionary Charles Stewart), widely known in the Hispanic world as the host of a popular radio and television program, graciously agreed to serve as the on-camera presenter and narrator.

Audio and video recording took place in the studios of Global University. The thirty Spanish video stories have been combined into two DVD collections: Encuentros con Cristo (Encounters with Christ) and La misión de Jesucristo (The Mission of Jesus Christ). The DVD's will be distributed by Faith and Action for use in schools, churches, homes and other venues. The series will also be available to Hispanic broadcast outlets.

Henry's involvement with the Spanish project has also sparked interest in developing other major language versions of the videos. In 2011 he will work with the Northern Asia region to produce a Mandarin version. French and Portuguese language versions are also being considered.

2011 Preview & Prayer Priorities

2011 is stacking up to be another busy year. God continues to give us amazing opportunities to use media around the world. There are more technology tools and open doors to use them than ever before. Please pray with us that God will direct and help us as we respond to these strategic challenges.

Pray especially for favor and provision as we undertake an abbreviated missionary itineration for 3 months next Spring. The economic downturn of the past 2 years has significantly impacted our support. Your partnership has never been more important. Thanks for your continued confidence in us and your sacrificial investment in our missionary ministry!
