What's on our Needles?
by Amy & Rachael

J is for Join Us! This week is the start of our very first Knit-A-Long and we hope you will join us on this joyful journey! We will be working on "Whiskyfied" by Melanie Berg. The schedule for the KAL is posted in our group. We'll buy you the pattern when you buy yarn for the KAL!

Casting on a new project is so exciting! Will you like the yarn you chose? Will you like the color? Will you like the fabric the yarn and needles make? We hope the answers to these questions will all be "yes!" and that you enjoy the project from start to finish. We planned the schedule to keep us all moving forward toward a completed project, but hopefully the pace will not be too fast for folks with busy schedules. This isn't a race though.  If you get ahead because you are on a roll, don't stop! If you fall behind because life gets in the way, no big deal. This will be fun!
Each week, on Tuesdays, beginning this Tuesday - May 6th - we'll have a knit-a-long community gathering from 5 to 7 pm.  You can come and ask questions of Rachael or Amy, show off your KAL WIP, and enjoy the spirit of knitting as a community!  OR, if you’re more of a virtual joiner (or you don’t live in town), join us on our Ravelry group page to share questions, comments, progress, yarn choices, and WIP photos and stories. Here's a link to join our Wooden Spools Ravelry Group. Make sure to click the button to join our group and then start posting in the KAL Chatter and WIP thread (save the finished object KAL thread for when you are all done with your KAL!).
This knit-a-long will have 8 sections and will start Monday, May 6.  We’ll be posting all information for the breakdown of the KAL in our Ravelry group, so make sure you join us there. At the end of the KAL, we will have a celebratory open house!! Join us to show off your newly completed “Whiskyfied” shawl and meet and greet your new knitting friends. This will be Friday, July 12 from 4pm to 7pm. Drop in and have some refreshments and show off your great project!
We CAN’T WAIT to see all of the lovely projects you will be creating!! Join us and knit ALONG instead of knitting ALONE!

Week of May 5, 2019 – Name Inscribed Quilts

I am so excited to share with you these pictures from last weekend!  I had the chance to go with 3 girlfriends (Scotti, Linda and Janet) to a special “Quilts That Speak” symposium in Lincoln, NE at the IQSC.

What a wealth of information we received.  I can only share a few of the +100 photos I took.  The first one is the four of us under a quilt of the 50 states which we found on the side of a lumber yard building in Cozad, NE (they also have a great quilt shop in that town).  This was just a bonus we found on our way to Lincoln.

This red and white quilt was made in 1917, probably as a fund raiser during WWI.  You paid to have your name inscribed and then they auctioned off the quilt to raise money for the Red Cross.

This stunning broken dishes/pinwheel quilt has 7168 pieces.  The inscription on the back reads:

Made in Westport Town

I’m Bird in the Air

Sleep under me

And banish Care

Saloma Thorpe 7168 pieces

The inking on this block to the left is amazing and includes an inscription as well as drawings of thistles and roses around the words which read:

Tho oft thro life we Thistles meet

We sometimes pluck the Rose.

The inscription on this pink and white quilt (the quilt also contained many famous signatures) made me laugh out loud!  It reads:

Oft have I been by Women jilted

But ne’er before by women quilted.

I can’t quite make out the name, but I can only imagine he must have been quite a lady’s man to have been jilted so often!

We saw a red/white and blue quilt made in 1974-75 by Mina Kuthe.  It contains many famous signatures including:  Betty Ford, Pat Nixon, Richard Nixon and Mamie Eisenhower.   continue reading
