SXSW 2022 Wrapup

Now that SXSW 2022 is in the books, here are a few stray observations: It felt ‘full’, but not ‘crowded’. I did see people in lines for the ACL venue, but otherwise, nothing seemed like it was at or over capacity. I was surprised to see a completely empty Convention Center lobby near the escalators where it’s usually shoulder-to-shoulder. I still attribute this to more Downtown venues spreading crowds around than to a lack of attendees. It seemed ‘quieter’ this year and that’s a positive sign. We had fewer “Professional Spring Breakers” and more business people checking out SXSW for the first time. There were fewer ‘stunts’ and buskers on the street and that helped focus on the business atmosphere. The only two places that were loud (and where I’m certain I lost my voice – a SXSW occupational hazard) were the private parties with live bands. I’m all for live music, but when it’s overwhelming the conversations I think it misses the point of the event. Entrepreneur’s Lounge, typically my favorite event of SXSW learned this lesson so the conversations were great and we didn’t have to scream over speakers. The Wellness Expo at the Palmer was well done, and I hope to see the CPG Track emerge from it again in years to come. The main trade show at the Convention Center was eclectic to say the least. There wasn’t much of a floorplan that I could follow, and it had booths next to each other that didn’t flow smoothly for someone walking the floor. Swag, like T-Shirts, stress balls, and koozies were at a minimum and I don’t think that most people missed it too much. Overall, the actual speakers and panels were well-received though I admit I only got to see one this year. The off-site parties and events had a great vibe and interesting people. I really believe that this may be one of my best SXSW’s and certainly Top 3. I think that the organizers did an outstanding job of balancing content with safety and that made every attendee feel good about their decision to participate. Since the weather held up and our events went off without a major problem, I’m calling SXSW 2022 a massive win and I’m already planning next year.
