GMC April Newsletter

Dear Fellow Gonzaga Moms,

I hope that everyone enjoyed the long break and a joyous Easter!  Eye Street is busy with lots of activities as Spring has finally arrived.  We look forward to seeing you this Wednesday, April 6 at 6:30pm in the Lower Commons for our last GMC meeting of the school year.  Father Planning will provide his traditional remarks and updates on campus, and Cydney Mulieri will be our guest speaker from Campus Ministry providing information about their Service and Retreat programs.  She will be able to share a unique perspective from working in the Campus Ministry department and as a Gonzaga mom.
Also, please mark your calendars for our May 4, Joint Parents Meeting with the GFC.  We will begin the meeting with dinner at 6:30 pm in the Arrupe Commons before moving into the Sheehy Theater.  This is a special event where we will enjoy fellowship with moms and dads in the Gonzaga community and have a special speaker.  This year, we are honored and thankful to have Magda and Pat Pettey join us for a very meaningful talk about Forgiveness.  This is an important topic anytime, but especially during this Holy Year of Mercy.  We hope that you will be able to join us.
Thanks to everyone who has already signed up to donate delicious foods or to volunteer for the International Food Fair on April 13!  It takes a lot of volunteers and even more food to feed all of our hungry teenage sons, so please see the information below to sign up to help.
Help is needed for our other scheduled event for the next few months.  Please see the information below and signup to help if you can for the Bake Sale for the Father McKenna Center on April 27, the Mother’s Day Flowers distribution at the Unique Residential Care Center on May 6, the Faculty & Staff Summer Send Off Luncheon on June 1, the beautiful Baccalaureate Reception on June 4, and the welcoming New Mothers Luncheon on June 8.  Please also signup to volunteer as Mentor Mom or help host a Get Acquainted Party over the summer – it is a wonderful, fun way to welcome and engage new Gonzaga families.  Information on how to help or who to contact is below.
We also have received a request for help from the GFC for photos for a video for the Father-Son Mass & Breakfast.  What a great way to celebrate our Gonzaga guys in their Gonzaga gear!  Please see information below for details.
Many thanks to all of you for joining the GMC this year!  Your enthusiasm and support have allowed us to accomplish so much this year and your dues have helped pay for refreshments at events like the Welcome Picnic, Back to School Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, and support for Faculty Stipends for summer enrichment.  Kudos to Mia DeWitt, our Membership Chair, for her work to increase GMC membership this year!
Join me in thanking Sarah Feigherty and Valarie Warburton for providing refreshments for parents and to Beata Gierdalski and Alison Quatrini for arranging for and serving dinner to our teachers at Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Thank you also to Mary Plantamura for coordinating the monthly Ignatian Reflection & Prayer Group meetings and providing summaries for those who could not attend.   Much appreciation and thanks go out to Yvonne Shincovich and Kristin Yohannan, our Senior Class Liaisons, who have organized the sale of the Senior Class T-shirts, helped keep the Senior parents informed of announcements, and for hosting the Senior Parent “Letting Go” night last week.
Many thanks to Hazel Lychak and Sharon PersinskiFaculty Treats Chairs, and their team of volunteers who were amazing hostesses each month at creative breakfast feasts to recognize and show appreciation to our Gonzaga faculty.
Thank you to Jennifer Tobey and Stacia Todd, our amazing Closet Chairs, who help things run more smoothly by planning and providing supplies for every event and by keeping the closets well-organized. Special thanks to Jennifer for spending many hours and days over Spring Break to clear out clutter from the closets to ensure that we met Fire Code!
We are also grateful to Anne Barsanti GriffithGMC Family Support Chair, for sending well-wishes on our behalf to so many in our community during times of illness, loss, injury, or celebration.   As always, we thank Irene Zaso, Communications Chair, for her masterful communications with the monthly E-newsletters and frequent E-blasts to keep you informed about happenings on Eye Street!
Hope to see you on Wednesday,
Suzanne Dowd

Graduation Tuxedos

Mr. Kilroy has met with a representative from Men's Warehouse regarding graduation tuxedos.  Men's Warehouse will be on campus in late April, during lunch periods, to measure the seniors for their graduation tuxes.  The boys should be on the lookout for a date announced soon after Spring Break.
The graduates will need to provide two items: black shoes and black socks for the Graduation photo on Friday, June 3rd, and to be worn at graduation.

Mentoring New Families in 2016-2017

Remember when you were new to Gonzaga?  Perhaps with your first child in high school?  The simplest things can feel overwhelming!
Please consider guiding a few new moms through the process by offering to answer questions and provide information.  Often these questions are as simple as "What kind of shoes do the boys wear?"
All it takes to provide that support is one phone call during the summer, and another during the fall, to reach out and connect with a new mom.  You can answer any immediate questions, share some of our Gonzaga friendliness, and leave your contact information for future questions. It's so easy, yet makes such a big difference.  To volunteer to mentor 4 or 5 families, please CLICK HERE.

Baccalaureate Mass Reception  - June 4th

If you would like to volunteer to assist with the reception, please email  Mary Gately, Eileen Joransen, and Susan Pollack at

Sign-Up for the GMC President's Brunch
April 24th, 12noon

Bring a friend & join other Gonzaga Moms in celebration
Join past GMC Presidents at Rose Cameron's home in Alexandria, VA to celebrate Suzanne Dowd's enthusiastic leadership and tireless devotion to Gonzaga as the Mothers Club President this year. Brunch will be held on Sunday, April 24th, 2016, 12noon.
Space is limited
On Sat. April 2nd, 23 members of the Gonzaga community bundled and sorted diapers at the DC Diaper Bank in support of the February Diaper Drive. In two hours, mothers and sons (plus one dad and three siblings) bundled and stacked 15,575 diapers. Created 630 bundles of diapers, which was 130 MORE than Eagles Wings (EW) did a few weeks ago at a similar event. When the boys found out EW did 500, it got a little competitive to the benefit of the diaper bank.
Great job to the boys and moms! Many expressed eagerness to return soon.

Mother’s Day Flowers - Friday, May 6th

We will assemble approximately 90 vases of flowers in the morning and deliver them to the Unique Residential Care Center next to Gonzaga.  Flowers and volunteers needed PLEASE SIGN UP

Summer Send-Off Luncheon for Gonzaga Faculty and Staff

Will be held June 1 in the Lower Commons. Look for a sign-up genius in mid-April requesting drinks and gift cards or sports event tickets to be raffled as prizes at the luncheon. Contact Jean Schlesinger and Erin Donovan at for more info.

Get Acquainted Parties

During August, September, and October, Gonzaga families volunteer to host small get-togethers to welcome incoming freshman and transfer student families.  The GMC, in cooperation with the Headmaster's Office, works with the host families to prepare guest lists and schedule dates for these gatherings in various locations throughout DC, VA, and MD.  If you are interested in assisting with this fun way to welcome new families to Gonzaga, the GMC has some easy and simple ideas to get you started.
