The Greening of Roncy

For the past two years our Green Team has been designing and maintaining the 21 plant beds along Roncesvalles in partnership with the Roncesvalles Village BIA. Find out what's involved in urban street gardening along Roncy and learn about our approach. Take a walk up Roncy to enjoy the results. You can also browse the RoncyWorks Garden Gallery and share your photos.

Outdoor Ashtrays

This summer, the RVBIA installed 30 ashcans along Roncesvalles Ave., as part of the Cigarette Litter Prevention pilot study. Provided at no cost by Keep America Beautiful and supplied by Ecolad, the ashcans supplement the cigarette receptacles located inconspicuously on the Astral waste bins. RoncyWorks is relieved to have weatherproof ashcans divert litter, replacing our handmade butt tins that were too often filled with trash and rain. RoncyWorks is conducting a number of scans to measure effectiveness.

Reducing Cigarette Butt Litter

Toronto pilot study on Roncesvalles

Cigarette butt litter is not only an eyesore -- and a problem that discourages our volunteers who work on the plant beds. It’s a global litter problem that cities are grappling with. That's why we started taking steps to reduce cigarette litter on Roncy over three years ago.

We learned that filters are not biodegradable. They can take years to break down. They clog our filtration systems, overflow into waterways and wash up on shores. They leach harmful chemicals into water and soil and harm animals that mistake them for food. That's why RoncyWorks stepped up to lead a pilot study in Toronto with the RVBIA as part of the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program run by Keep America Beautiful.

Pocket Ashtray, eh!

Smokers can soon pick up a FREE pocket ashtray at participating variety stores, cafes, pubs and restaurants along Roncesvalles Ave. while supplies last. Handy for when you're on the go. Store cigarette butts safely until you get somewhere with a proper cigarette receptacle.

TIP: Don't empty butts down the toilet or a drain. READ MORE TIPS >>

What's That Tree?

We heard so much positive feedback on our handmade labels used to identify the trees when they were freshly planted along Roncesvalles. This inspired Tree Team lead Bill Montague to create permanent ones. After many trials, Bill resourcefully arrived at an elegant solution that is simple to install. You’ll now see black metal labels attached to the tree guards of each tree. READ MORE >>
