Letter from the Editor
Henry Ford once said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”  Cars have been an American obsession almost since Ford rolled out the first Model T’s in the early 1900’s and automotive advertising remains a major, if not the top billing category for radio and television stations in 2014.  That’s why we’re proud to announce that Dave Burke, President of Burke Media Marketing will present his seminar titled “Street Smart Strategies for Selling More Car Dealers” at the 2014 Massachusetts Broadcasters Association Sound Bites event on October 29th in Natick.

Not wanting to leave programmer’s out of the loop.  Fred Jacobs, President of Jacobs Media, will present a three-part seminar on a variety of subjects critical to programmers and on-air talent.  Read more about both seminars later in this e-newsletter.

I hope you’ll seriously consider bringing your entire sales or programming team to Sound Bites this year.  Not only will they bring something back to the station that’s immediately helpful but they’ll have a great chance to mingle with fellow broadcasters, have a great meal and be thoroughly entertained by one of New England’s funniest people!

So mark it on your calendars – October 29th (you’re going to hear that from us a lot!).

Sound Bites Speaker Preview
Each year, the MBA’s annual Sound Bites event begins with two concurrent seminars, one specifically for the sales department, and a second, usually for programmers and jocks.
This year, the sales seminar will be hosted by Dave Burke from Burke Media Marketing.   Dave will present “Street Smart Strategies for Selling More Car Dealers.” Automotive remains atop the revenue category list for most broadcasters even as this business continues to undergo major changes in how it markets itself.
Fred Jacobs, from Jacobs Media, will host this year’s programming seminar, with a three-part series covering technology, social and mobile efforts, and taking care of the talent.

MBA Finds Joint Management Seminar Successful
Earlier this month the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association, along with the New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters, held the first-ever joint seminar aimed at strengthening management skills among their members.  Survey results suggest that the most at the session walked away with some actionable items to bring back to their respective stations.

The seminar, led by Revenue Development Resources’ Mark Levy focused on some key skills that any manager would find useful...

Washington Remains a Busy Place for Broadcasters
Between STELA (Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act) reauthorization, continued speculation about the broadcast television spectrum auction and performance rights issues for radio, Washington, D.C. is a busy place for broadcasters.

On June 10, the Senate Judiciary Committee introduced a “clean” STELA reauthorization bill that would simply extend the expiration date of current STELA legislation to December of 2019...
