Letter from the Editor
Brian Johnson, lead singer from AC/DC once belted out, “for those about to rock.  We salute you!” On November 14th we will salute the winners of the 2013 MBA Broadcasting Awards.

Last year we awarded our Broadcaster of the Year to WBZ-TV’s Jack Williams.  This year the honor is again up for grabs to a broadcaster that has spent a career committed to his or her work, the broadcasting industry and the community.

But “what about everybody else?”  We asked ourselves.   What about the engineer who trudges through rain, sleet and snow to keep your station on the air every winter?  Or what about the account executive that loosened his tie, rolled up his sleeves and helped his client unload a truck when one of their guys called out sick?  Shouldn’t they get recognized?

Well this year, they will.  Introducing the “Above and Beyond” Award.  This award will be given to one individual who has gone the extra mile in the past year.  From a part-time janitor to the station owner, anyone who works in the broadcasting industry is eligible.  Our “Above and Beyond” nomination form, as well as our 2013 Broadcaster of the Year nomination form, are available now on the new  You can also email me at and I will be happy to send it to you.

It’s time to recognize the people that make your station rock!

Small Victory in Piracy
Equipment Seizure Small Victory in Fight Over Piracy
In late May the U.S. Attorney’s office announced that they had seized equipment from a pirate radio station operating in Roslindale, MA. At least one licensed broadcaster had complained to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) about the station, which set the chain of events in motion.

The station was first warned to stop operating illegally on several occasions. When the FCC returned, the station was still transmitting.  In an article on, U.S Attorney for Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz is quoted as saying “It is a potential hazard to public safety for pirate radio stations to broadcast illegally and interfere with critical radio communications."  The U.S. Attorney’s Office will work in conjunction with the FCC to identify and seize equipment from these pirate broadcasters.
Continuing Education Reimbursement Program
Continuing Education Grants Continue to Help MBA Members
In a world of media consolidation and tightening budgets, training for radio and television station employees is often among the first thing to get cut.  With fewer seminars, outdated training books and technology that evolves quickly, employees can easily be left behind.   Enter the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association’s Continuing Education Reimbursement Program (CERP).

Through the CERP an MBA member can get reimbursed for just about any educational endeavor that will help them do their job better. The MBA will reimburse up to $500 for members to attend seminars or webinars, purchase training books, workshops, take post secondary classes and more.
