Welcome to the Basis Yorkshire Newsletter

We'd like to wish all of our funders, donors, trustees, staff, volunteers and friends a very good Christmas and all the best for 2017 and thank you for your continued support and dedication. We've had an incredible year with our team and office ever expanding through additional funding and new campaigns. Don't forget to keep updated with all our latest news by following us on social media and checking out our website...

December has been an especially busy month, outlined by our #17daysofaction campaign, leading up to the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, an issue we feel passionately about at Basis Yorkshire. Below are all the events that took place over the last 17 days...

All Night Outreach

From 8pm 16th December - 4am 17th December, our team got together and took shifts to complete an all night outreach in Holbeck. There was a huge sense of community and comradery as we were able to give out winter warmer packs, christmas food and mince pies and warm drinks to women throughout the night. Many thanks to all who got involved!
Vertical Fitness Fundraising

Last weekend, as part of our #17daysofaction, some of the members of the University of Leeds Vertical Fitness society took part in a charity Silks Workshop and have generously donated all proceedings to Basis Yorkshire. This is the first of several collaborations that will occur over the coming year, and we are delighted and grateful to have them as part of our extended team! Thank you to our instructor - Lorna from Leeds Aerial Arts and Open Source Arts - for making this event possible.

We're thrilled to have received £4192 from Leeds Community Foundation to deliver a Winter-wellbeing program for our street based and indoor working women. The program will allow us to collect data from women on how the winter affects them, provide winter-warmth packs, run winterwarmth activities in our new office hub to reduce isolation in winter,  and refer women to other services where relevant.
Basis Training awarded major CSE Training Contract
We're pleased to announce that Basis Training in partnership with the BLAST Project was awarded a 4 yr contract to deliver CSE Training for Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees Children's Services.  We look forward to working with practitioners from across Yorkshire to improve their capacity to  recovnise and support young people at risk of or experiencing CSE.
Congratulations to Nicky

We’d like to congratulate Nicky on obtaining the role of complex needs worker for Basis Yorkshire as part of the Women’s Lives Leeds consortium.  Funded by the Women and Girls Initiative from Big Lottery, and we are delighted that the new contract will allow Nicky to support sex workers with complex needs in Leeds for the next 4 years. In early December, Nicky was also awarded runner up in the Yorkshire Evening Post Health Awards Unsung Hero for her work as Health, Support and Advocacy worker.
Service User Christmas Meal
We held two wonderful Christmas parties for our service users, involving presents, winter warmer packs and a delicious spread from The Real Junk Food Project – many thanks! The CPS also came to speak to the women about the role they have in ensuring that there is no discrimination of sex workers in court and to reiterate that sexual violence is a serious offence no matter what your profession or situation and explain more about coercive control. We really appreciated their time and commitment to sex worker safety.
Donations, donations, donations

If you're doing a premature spring clear out of if you have any unwanted Christmas gifts, we always welcome donations, especially chocolate for outreach and warm clothes in these winter months. Find us at our office or go through our just giving page.
Christmas Fair at Slung Low

We had a lovely time at the annual SlungLow Christmas fair on the 4th December, selling a range of sweets and treats made by our volunteers and staff raising £65. Our items ranged from hot chocolate reindeers to handmade wool scarves and gloves to homemade bath-bombs! The team at SlungLow put on a fantastic show, providing mulled wine, delicious food, a choir and even a Charleston! Many thanks for having us and for your continuous support.
'The Art of a Profession' Exhibition
On Friday evening, 9th December, ‘The Art of a Profession’ opened for one night only in the Hyde Park Book Club. A huge thank you goes to all the artists who worked incredibly hard on the pieces they donated for the cause and all the people who turned up and showed their support for sex workers rights and safety. We have already raised a stunning £215 from the art sold, and have gratefully been able to extend the exhibition in the Brunswick for an extra week, to raise even more awareness and hopefully sell some more artwork!
Flash Mob

On the final day of our #17daysofaction - the Int. Day to End Violence against Sex Workers - we remembered particularly the sex workers who have been murdered over the years, including Daria Pionko who lost her life on December 23rd last year. Staff, volunteers and allies of Basis took to the streets of Leeds for our first ever flash mob to raise awareness. A massive thank you to everyone who put up their umbrellas for sex workers rights and to all of you have supported us along the way – look at the video to see what we got up to!
Welcome Marie!

A warm welcome to Marie Park who will be part of our Housing First pilot program, working closely with Joan Coulton, focusing on the co-production element of the program. This role will be key to the success of the Housing First Program and its great to have Marie, who has substantial co-production experience as part of the team and we wish her well in her new position.
Upcoming CSE Campaign
As we move towards the end of the year, we are looking ahead to March 18th – the National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day. The Basis YP and Time 2 Project teams have already started to develop our campaign, which will run from the 13th – 18th March in Leeds and York. We will keep you updated on what is to come!
Versatile Volunteers

On Dec. 14th, staff from Lloyds Bank gave a whole day to clearing up the area around the Mosaic in Holbeck, decorating the office for the service user Christmas parties and packaging a mountainous amount of condoms! We also welcome three new drop-in volunteers – Katarina, Tina and Sam – who are already doing a marvellous job organising activities for the women, making a lively hub out of our drop-in centre.
