DC Bocce Rolls to NoMa
Get your bocce on in NoMa! DC Bocce League will soon start construction on two new 10' X 50' bocce courts in NoMa at the corner of First and M Streets, NE. Registration for the new NoMa division of DC Bocce will open on March 3, 2013. Players can create a team, join an existing team, or sign up as individuals. Click for season details and to register
DC Bocce and their sister company, Major League Bocce, form a home grown enterprise founded in 2004 which has demonstrated tremendous growth during their nine years of operation. Today DC Bocce and Major League Bocce play in eight cities on the east coast hosting over 7,500 active members playing bocce all year long. One of the founding tenants of the organization is a commitment to charitable giving. In every DC Bocce League season, the winners of each division are awarded a donation to the charity of their choice. DC Bocce and Major League Bocce have donated over $100,000 to charities on behalf of league members since 2005. 
Curator Talk TONIGHT: Washington Project for the Arts
Tonight participate in an engaging curator talk from 6:30-8 p.m. at 64 New York Ave, NE, as part of Washington Project for the Arts' SELECT Exhibit. The NoMa BID will be helping to make the curator talks a lovely evening by providing complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres from NoMa’s Toscana CaféWashington Project for the Arts unveiled its four-week annual art show at 64 New York Ave, NE on February 16 to a buzzing crowd. The artwork on view represents a cross-section of media and disciplines, providing a remarkable collection of contemporary artistic practice from local artists. 
If you can't make it tonight, the works will be on view to the public now through March 15, Wednesdays through Saturdays, from noon to 6 p.m. These events are free and open to the public. The works will be available for purchase on March 16, 2013 at SELECT: WPA 2013 Art Auction Gala, an event that, for the last 31 years, has helped WPA raise funds and awareness to support contemporary artists in our region. View the works onlinePurchase SELECT gala tickets.
Annual Homeless Census Count Shows Decrease in NoMa’s Homeless Population

The NoMa BID supported DC’s 2013 Point-in-Time Homeless Census in January, which provides a count of the total number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless in D.C. NoMa BID Hospitality and Outreach Manager, Otavio Thompson, led a team of 12 volunteers through the neighborhood as they counted and conducted brief surveys with homeless persons about their experiences and circumstances. This census count revealed that NoMa BID’s homeless population shrunk 50% compared to January 2012. This annual homeless census is part of a national effort, commissioned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, to understand where and how homeless people are living in an effort to improve our nation’s delivery of services to this vulnerable population.
Two Rivers Public Charter School Students Present Public Space Projects

On Thursday, March 21 two classes of Two Rivers Public Charter Schools presented their projects on public space in NoMa to the NoMa BID. There were seven presentations total, and each was unique, thoughtful, and fit a community need. Project ideas for public spaces in NoMa included a dog park, a multi-purpose recreational park, historical statues, and bright mosaics. These presentations from children who live in NoMa highlighted the urgent need for parks in the neighborhood. Many students talked about the difficult reality that there is currently no place to go and play afterschool, other than home (to play video games) or the 7-ELEVEN. 
Retail Spotlight: Thaaja Indian Food and Wine Bar
Thaaja, a new Indian restaurant that recently opened in January at 1335 Second Street, NE, is Founder and CEO Shailesh Kumar’s first foray into the restaurant business. Previously working on Wall Street, Kumar has a vision of “offering the wider American consumer base a variant of the food [he] grew up eating, but in an affordable, healthy, flavorful version”. The restaurant name means “fresh” in Hindi, and all of Thaaja's meats, produce, and sauces are just that. 
Thaaja offers a variety of build-your-own wraps and rice bowls. Kumar’s personal favorite item on the menu? A rice bowl with paneer, chickpeas, corn, onion, tomatoes, topped of with their Sir Tikka and Yogi sauce and a side of naan. RSVP for the First Street Construction Meeting 
On Tuesday, March 5, at 11:45 a.m., the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) manager overseeing the First Street Reconstruction Project, Ali Shakeri, will present the plans for the upcoming rebuild of First Street, NE. The presentation will be at the NoMa BID Offices, 1200 First Street, NE, Suite 310. All are welcome to attend; the NoMa BID will provide a light lunch. The DDOT project will extend from Union Station to New York Avenue. The project will complete the improvements to the sidewalks and public space, add a cycle track, new turn lanes, and street signals, and upgrade the underground infrastructure.  
Unfortunately this project will also disrupt traffic along First Street and the adjacent side streets for over a year. It is important that all property owners, tenants, and residents educate themselves about the imminent construction and be familiar with the accompanying traffic detours. Mr. Shakeri will explain the details of the project and answer questions at the presentation. If you plan to attend the luncheon meeting, please RSVP via email with your name and organization.
Runners Set Your Marks: MBT 5K

The Third Annual Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) 5K Run/Walk will be Saturday, May 11, 2013 on the off-road, paved portion of the MBT in Northeast D.C. More than 500 runners are expected to participate this year. The MBT 5K’s mission is to promote exercise and healthy activity for all ages and to build a sense of community engagement between the neighborhoods connected to the Metropolitan Branch Trail and the trail itself. To further this mission, race coordinators are reaching out to community groups, DC public and charter schools, and recreation centers and offering 150 free registrations to local youth.

Race co-sponsor DC Road Runners Club, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, which organizes more than 30 races annually in the DC area, will provide online registration, official timing and logistical support.  The 5K course is USATF-certified. As a charitable event, proceeds will go to subsidize youth runners and fund other MBT trail/community linkages, such as trail beautification, safety and social recreation. Road Closures for Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon 
The Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon & CareFirst Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Half Marathon is racing into town on Saturday, March 16. Visit Rock ‘n’ Roll’s website to view an interactive course map and download PDF versions of the course map and road closure times.
