Park(ing) Day 2019 in NoMa

The NoMa BID is excited to partner with DDOT and local businesses for D.C.'s 2019 Park(ing) Day event. Come to the heart of NoMa on September 20 to find curbside metered parking spots turned into mini-parks for a day! All of the following parklets will be open from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

First Street NE, 1100 Block, West Side
POOL PARTY: As summer comes to a close, architecture firm Antunovich Associates is throwing a pool party, and everyone's invited. Their parklet will feature artificial turf, a 2-foot-by-4-foot pool covered in glass mosaic tile, plantings, and chaise lounges and other seating. Stop by and dip your toes for a little warm-weather respite. And don't worry about safety: The space will be staffed by vigilant "lifeguards," who will also be handing out lemonade refreshments.

YOU'RE BRLLNT: Inspired by their gratitude for a beautiful new NoMa office, marketing/design agency Brllnt is creating a place for sharing kindness and giving back to the community. The cozy space will feature a tree built to hold cards, written by Brllnt staff and parklet visitors, saying “You’re Brllnt.” The cards can be taken away by visitors and given away personally, or left for the Brllnt team to distribute to community members, along with the book donations they'll be accepting all day long.

First Street NE, 1200 Block, East Side
MIRROR PARK: The vision of architect Colin Murray, this parklet will be enclosed on three sides by wooden shipping pallets, turned on their sides and filled with plantings along the top. Sod grass will fill the space, and there will be chairs and blankets available for people sit and relax for a while. NoMa restaurant Laos in Town will be on hand to provide free food all day long.

TANNER PARK IN MINIATURE: You've heard about the NoMa Parks Foundation's largest project, Alethia Tanner Park, now under construction and expected to open in a few months. Visit this roughly to-scale version for a preview of what NoMa's 2.5-acre park will offer, including green space, playground, dog park, and an improved Metropolitan Branch Trail. There will be materials about the park and its namesake, Alethia Tanner, and staff will be on hand to talk about what else the NPF is working on.

Rice Bar: Now on 2nd Street NE!

If you're a fan of bibimbap and other Korean noodle dishes, there's a new workday lunch option for you in NoMa: Rice Bar, which opened a few weeks ago on 2nd Street NE, half a block up from the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro station. Check out their menus here and here, then stop by Mondays through Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., to satisfy your hunger.

#ShowUp4DC Today & Tomorrow

Thursday, September 19, will be a historic day: It's the first time U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Reform will discuss D.C. statehood in more than a quarter-century. The bill being discussed, H.R. 51, was drafted by D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (whose office is in NoMa, if you didn't know). If you want to show your support: This evening, the statehood advocacy group 51 for 51 will hold a press conference at the U.S. Capitol, after which there will be a march in support of Rep. Norton and D.C. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Head to the 51 for 51 website and ShowUp4DC.com for more information.

Wunder Garten's Oktoberfest Returns

Dust off your lederhosen, Alpine hats, and steins, because Wunder Garten's fifth annual Oktoberfest is just around the corner: Friday, September 27 through Sunday, October 6. Enjoy traditional music and a special lineup of events and entertainment that will bring the spirit of the German celebration to NoMa. Draft beers in Märzen-style hail from Bavaria's oldest breweries like Spaten,  Franziskaner, and Hofbräuhaus, accompanied by a select lineup of seasonal, locally brewed beers. Throughout the celebration, Cafe Berlin and other food vendors will serve authentic German fare. Be sure to check the event page for full information and schedule of events.
