July 25: Public Art, Public Meeting

Our friends at Words Beats & Life — who in 2015 created the District's largest public art project at Storey Park in NoMa — would like to add a mural to the recently opened John & Jill Ker Conway Residence (1005 N. Capitol St. NE). To that end, they will host a public meeting at the building on July 25 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Join Words Beats & Life to learn what they are planning, chime in on your desire for such a mural, and share your thoughts for its design.

Qualia Coffee Opens at The Gale

After eight years with just a single D.C. storefront (plus numerous appearances at farmers markets around the city), Qualia Coffee has finally opened its second location, at The Gale Eckington (151 Q St. NE). The shop will be open daily from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm this week through Friday, and then begin its regular business hours this Saturday, July 22: 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekends, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on weekdays. In addition to offering various caffeinated beverages and teas, Qualia will also feature cream cheese-filled bagel bites from Poppy's Stuffed Bagels and scones and cookies from Paisley Fig.

How Should D.C. Think About Sustainability?

Just like our city, Sustainable DC is evolving! To reflect changes in the District since the initial release of the Sustainable DC plan five years ago, the Department of Energy and Environment launched a collaborative community engagement process — Sustainable DC 2.0 — to get public feedback on what the city's sustainability priorities and goals should be for the plan update. Help shape our sustainable future with this brief survey to share your ideas, needs, wants, and goals so that D.C. can become the healthiest, greenest, most livable city by 2032. Learn more and get involved by visiting the SustainableDC website.

WMATA's Plan for an Improved First Street NE Metro Access

WMATA has released a plan for improving the Union Station Metro access point on First Street NE. On the exterior, the entryway will be moved north a little bit, and a canopy and ADA-accessible ramp will be added. On the inside, WMATA wants to put in more fare gates and a new staircase to the Union Station concourse. The $5 million plan is expected to be approved soon, with construction scheduled to begin this coming winter.
