Welcome Rob Burchfield

Toole Design Group is pleased to announce that Robert Burchfield has accepted the position of Regional Engineering Director and will manage our Portland, Oregon office. Rob brings nearly three decades of experience as a traffic engineer in the City of Portland, including 16 years as the City Traffic Engineer. Among Rob’s proudest accomplishments is helping to establish Portland as one of the most multimodal cities in North America. During his tenure at the City, Rob managed a staff of over 130 and was responsible for a variety of modal programs over the years, including bicycles, pedestrians, streetcars, light rail trains, buses and motor vehicles.

Inspired by a study tour to Amsterdam and Copenhagen, Rob was responsible for implementing many new and innovative design treatments on Portland’s streets. His experience spurred him to conceive and lead the development of the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide. Rob’s achievements earned him the 2009 Public Sector Professional of the Year award from the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Rob on board,” said Jennifer Toole, President. “He has a wealth of experience in municipal transportation issues and will be a tremendous resource to our clients throughout North America, many of whom look to Portland for inspiration. Rob has a knack for getting innovative projects on the ground – he has an engineer’s eye for detail, and a track record of building vibrant urban streets.”

We are pleased to announce the following staff promotions:

RJ Eldridge has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he will work with Jennifer Toole to strengthen Toole Design Group’s national presence and provide support to branch offices, oversee our Planning practice on a national level, and continue to work on key company projects.
