Hi there,
Some notes:
Deconstructing Circus (Evaluation): Waiting on some confirmation, but I should be closing and evaluating the Deconstructing Circus project quite soon. As part of that evaluation I want to collect feedback from readers, so if you've been following the project and you'd like to help out with that you can fill out a box here – or alternatively just e-mail me (john@sideshow-circusmagazine.com). Feedback can be on anything – whether it was interesting as a format/concept, then whether or not it was actually interesting in practice; favourite / least favourite articles; balance of artists covered; whether it introduced you to any new companies or ideas; etcetera etcetera. If you want to look at the original application for context then I put that here (I cut out the personal info, but I applied as an individual). I'll publish the evaluation as well, in a month or so.
I'm closing the project in terms of filing the paperwork, but I've got four or so more interviews that are in half-done states, so those will go up in time. For now, there's the final contribution from Cesc Martinez – an interview with the members of PSiRC. It answers many questions about their first piece together, Acrometria, but doesn't solve the enduring mystery of why so many Catalan artists use wood as a material in their shows. For my part I interviewed Jay Gilligan about Bevis, a performance for libraries created with Erik Åberg. Totally a pleasure to talk to Jay and I feel like the final article is packed full of detailed, rational insight.
And then: I was writer in residence for the Roundhouse over the course of their CircusFest last month & among other things they sent me to Calais to pre-interview Sanja Kosonen and Elice Abonce Muhonen ahead of their appearance in London with Capilotractées. Parts of that interview got published at the time, but I wanted to work on it some more and ended up writing this.
It's not particularly experimental – it's quite a straightforward article with some extra bits of media which you could strip out without changing too much – but I had to learn some new things doing it & it's a first step towards absorbing some of the ideas that are currently emerging from the converged newsrooms of larger and better resourced media bodies.
There'll be one other piece from the CircusFest (ETA [Manuel, voice]: eventually), but after that I'm looking for rich and interesting and multi-layered things to write about. If you've got a subject / story / project that you think is worth covering in depth then let me know – john@sideshow-circusmagazine.com

The Art of Hair Hanging: Capilotractées →
Elice has long black hair, Sanja's is long and orange. Then, an idea: why not hang from it? Determined to make a show together, they began to practice the (almost) forgotten art of hair hanging — with no experience, no teacher, and only a few clues.

Jay Gilligan on Bevis →
'The difficulty of having a successful show that you didn't exactly make on purpose is that when you go to do the sequel you can't really fall back on the same process that you pursued the first time because the process the first time was completely random.'
