News from St. Jude's: Winter 2016 - Volume 6 Issue 4

Adult Day Program Started

October 18th, 2016 was a good day. St. Jude's welcomed our first client to our new Adult Day Program. This program was developed to help support elders and their families who are still living at home but are awaiting placement at St. Jude's or another residential care home. On the very first day, we received a great compliment when one of the participants didn't want to go home at the end of her day. It's a good sign.

Now, a month and a bit into it, we have a small number of clients attending. Some elders live on their own so coming to St. Jude's provides the company and home cooked meals they wouldn't otherwise get. Other clients live with their spouses. The program gives caregivers a chance for some much needed respite; a chance for a nap or shopping or maybe a visit with a friend. For all those of you who found the wait to move into care was too long, you know what this is like. Some families are really struggling to hang on. I admire them.

What has been lovely is the friendships that are developing between Day Program clients and residents. I witnessed this at our last Lunch Club as a listed to women sharing their stories over lasagna and a glass of wine. And, the addition of more men for ballroom dance classes Tuesday mornings is a bonus.

The Day Program is coordinated by Terri Ferguson, Director of Care. I send a ‘shout out' to her for all her work in starting and coordinating the Program. I also want to thank our staff who have made clients feel so welcome. St. Jude's is such a special place.

Residents' Corner

At St Jude's we have been busy getting ready for the Holidays. Our Christmas baking started with contributing to the Jingle Bell Cafe. We had lots of fun baking, packaging and of course sampling.

This Season we have been invited to Tea at Hycroftt, London Farm's, Saint Mary's Kerrisdale, Christmas lunch at The Bayshore Inn, and the list goes on. December's calendar is full of suggestions made by our Elders.

Our Family and Friends Christmas parties will be held 2:30-4:00 Tuesday December 20th for the 1st floor and Thursday December 22nd for the 2nd, we hope you are able to attend but realize this is not always possible, for that reason we have festive activities throughout the month.

Family and friends make the holiday season a special one we hope you join us in making 2016 a memorable holiday season.

Season's Greetings!

Jingle Bell Cafe: A Big Success

The annual Christmas bake sale event, the "Jingle Bell Cafe", held on November 16, was a highlight of the month at St Jude's. Staff members, Board members, family and friends outdid themselves in producing a wide variety of seasonal goodies to tempt and delight. There was a happy buzz in the dining room that was augmented by the polished piano playing of a visiting family member. Priced just right, the baking sold well and with donations, St. Jude's was able to raise $2000.00 from the event. Watch for the event next year, it is not to be missed!

We wish to thank Sandey Berry, now a volunteer with the St Jude's fundraising committee, for organizing this successful event.

Upcoming Event: "Guilty Conscience" Play

St. Jude's invites all family, friends and staff to a lighthearted evening of fun and fundraising at the Metro Theatre: 7:00pm, Wednesday March 8, 2017, 1370 SW Marine Drive, Vancouver.

The play "Guilty Conscience" tells the story of a confident Manhattan lawyer, who has never lost a case and is anticipating a messy and expensive divorce from his wife. He rehearses, with the prospective "prosecutor" a number of courtroom scenarios, as he plans how to get away with murder. The plot thickens (as you knew it would) when his girlfriend gets involved.

Tickets are available at the St. Jude's Front Desk for $50 each. Or call: 604-874-3200 ext. 0 or email

A tax receipt for $25 per ticket is available upon request. We will have a silent auction, 50/50 draw and light refreshments available. This is a great idea for a Christmas Gift! We are looking forward to seeing you there.
